Need Help

I just bought a 1985.5 944 with 139,00 miles on it. It was the neighbors. The crankshaft bolt, washer and woodruff key came out and of course no oil pressure. They sold it to me for 2000.00 dollars. They said a new oil pump had been put on and they thought the bolt had been cross threaded as it was put in. My question is: Which is more probable it was stripped or was it not torqued appropriately (192lbs) Is it possible to crossthread that fine thread bolt with that little of an area in the end of the shaft. My gut says no and i've ordered a new bolt, key and washer. Am i headed in the right direction?

I'm a big fan of cheap-and-cheerful repairs first. Try R&R-ing the crank bolt and related seals and such, prime the oil pump, and crank away to see if you get pressure. Torque should be 154lbs (or was it 145? Either/or, really).

The Crank Bolt Torque is to be set at 155 ft lbs.

Cheers,
Larry

Is it possible for that bolt to have been crossthreaded and thus the reason it came out in the first place. I guess thats my only worry. I've never heard of threads being stripped or crossed in the end of a crankshaft.

if the key came out, did the crank spin on the cam belt sprocket?
if it did, you may have some valve damage.
BTW happy thanksgiving
