Question Changing Cambelt

Hey guys,

Just reached 150k and thought it was about time to do the cambelt as it hasn't been done since 120k. It looks really awkward to get to. What is the best way to get at it? Looks like the radiator has to come off?

kind regards

Will

Hi Will, Check out Clark's Garage.com for how to change out the Cam and Balance Belts at the link below. Should give you all the information on how to do it.

Timing Belt and Balance Shaft Belt Installation

Cheers,
Larry

I don't think you have to pull the radiator but it helps free up a bit of space so it's easier to work. The hoses get in the way also. The radiator comes out EZ.

Check out Arnnworx for good info and tools.

You don't have to pull the radiator but it's nice when the fans are out of the way. You don't need to pull them, either, though.

What is your level of technical expertise? Things look a lot less tricky when you're used to wrenching, but it IS daunting at first.

What year is the car? Turbo or not? What got changed at 120k? Rollers/water pump/hoses/front seals?

Pulling the fans is super-easy. Just 6 screws and two connections. Plus you can use this as an opportunity to clean those connections!

It really only only needs to be changed every 40-50K miles, depending on how much oil is making it's way through the front seals. Unless you've got yourself a gusher, you are jumping in to it a bit early. But it certainly won't hurt anything. The cost factor is negligeible. But the hassle factor is what would cause me to hold out for another 10k, or so.

JUST A REMINDER: DO NOT TURN THE CAMSHAFT while the crankshaft it at either TDC or BDC. If it needs to be turned when the belt is off, ONLY do it after making sure the crank is 45-90 degrees away from TDC or BDC.

When I changed the belts on mine I didn't take the fans or radiator off, but it really helps to jack the car up enough to sit in front of the motor. also make sure if you need the rollers or not, the cambelt kit is cheaper than a broken engine.

DO NOT LISTEN TO WILD MAN! Repeat after me, "I WILL change my belts every 3yrs OR 30k miles, whichever comes first!"

No you do not need to remove the radiator, mine was due for a proper cleaning though and it made the job MUCHO easier.

When was the water pump last done? Now is the time to do it as well...

Hey, I'm not saying that it's going to hurt anything. And if there's decent amount of oil getting onto it, it might not even be such a bad idea. And it's always a good idea to check your WP and rollers (and seals, also), while your in there.
