Starter motor failure

Starter motor failure...
Hi my son's 924 1984' has developed a starter-motor failure. It has for some time been irregular.
Typically it gave its breath up in a deep parking garage...

He has bought himself a new starter. I wonder how easy it is to change. It is cold and will probably be a pain... Does anyone have some good tips for us? We have to use jack-stands, as we dont have access to a lift.

go to the Garage shop manual. Luckily the starter on these cars is right on bottom. Just unhook the battery and swap it. The bolts will be VERY stuck so be prepared for a fight. Other than that there is nothing special about it. Good luck

Pulled my starter motor on my 944 when I did the clutch slave, it was pretty simple. I did have the front of the car on ramps though. If you get it up in the air I don't see why you couldn't swap it in the garage. Good luck!

It is under the exhaust mainfold on the 24. I think it would probably be easier to remove the oil filter (and oil). Clean the cables while you are at it.

Providing the cables & connections are OK, it is most likely just the solenoid. Notorious problem on these cars.

R & R is an easy task, particularly on a LHD. No need to remove the filter, except for the adapter on RHD vehicles, which your`s isn`t. Heat shield (if still fitted) can be a PITA if bolts are corroded in though. Most do not go back on, and personally have had no dramas without it. That`s in Australia too (with higher ambient temps) and header pipes very close.

Check the condition of the wiring & heat sleeve. Note the orientation of the 2 smaller wires, so they go back correctly. One for the solenoid primary, the other for full 12V to ignition while cranking.
