Oil and Oil Additives
1. I recently purchased a car (1990 944S2 Cab) that recently had the number 1 intake valve spring replaced and the head looked over while out. The car has developed a tappet ticking sounds around the 3rd cylinder. Is there an additive that I can add that will help this tappet. I previously owned this car (two years ago) and the noise was not there
2. I live in FL and the car is an occasional driver, what oil is recommended. I have been using Castrol 20/50 year round but the shop put in Mobil 1 15/50. Thanks, Waxman Last edited by Waxman; 12-16-2010 at 11:19 AM.. Reason: Added Type of car |

imho about oil, check the owners manual for recomendations.
The real difference between 15/50 and 20/50 is COLD weather viscosity (the 15 will be thinner than the 20) but high temp viscosity (the 50) is the same. The Mobil 1 may be a better lubricant, but if the oil is changed frequently and doesn't get near 300 degrees, it may not matter much either. As for #1, I don't know.

maybe try adding some Seafoam before you change the oil.
Let it run for about 20 min? I'm sure there are others here that have more experience with freeing up ticking lifters

Recently purchased an 89 S2 ....had a slight tapping noise when I got it home. Changed the oil with 20W-50 Brad Penn and a Mahle filter........ very quiet now, runs great. I would recommend highly.

Try the additives from Lubro Moly...they make legitimate motor oil adds, not snake oil. Their website lists the complete line.

Guys n gals:
Remember, "No Oil Additive's" were ever and are Porsche factory approved, even on the latest Sports cars. Use Better lubricants and Fix problem before it escalates... Later

As stated before, "SEAFOAM" added just before Oil Change. Get oil hot and when the lifter quiets down drain the oil.
Cheers, Larry

One thing to keep in mind as far as oil temps go is the oil sump temp is not the whole story. Localized temps in the bearings are usually much higher, especially at high loads/speeds. This also means that oil temps sitting in traffic an a hot day are actually less, since the speeds and loads in the bearings are very small at idle, even though the actual oil sump temperature may be higher than at normal driving.
The shear effects on the fluid as it supports the bearings also degrade lesser oils. High quality name brand oil, either conventional or synthetic, should work fine. Synthetic lasts longer and is much better for cold starting and extreme heat conditions such as racing or spirited driving. +1 on seafoam. Good stuff to use every now and then. Most of the cheaper oil additives just thicken the oil to try to make it seem like it lasts longer and doesn't leak past piston rings as easily. Anything else is dubious, but proper maintenance with high quality oil is the most important by far.
