Hey guys I am looking to see if you have any suggestions to save some money on a 944 turbo engine rebuild kit. I have only found one good one at 944 TURBO KIT at LINDSEY RACING - Your Porsche Performance Parts Center I have a 1986 944 turbo.
Thanks Guys!

Keep in mind you will need belts and rollers. A new WP would be worth it as well.

Thanks Bro! I was planning on that as well as a new clutch while I have it out. That is why I am trying to save some money where I can.

It seems like a good deal. While it is all apart i would also do the vac lines and consider a turbo rebuild.
Keep us posted! |

I picked up a turbo from JBM racing that seems to be in pretty good shape. A rebuild will be down the line for sure. I want to get this car running for summer. I had the last turbo blow and thought it would be a good time to rebuild the motor and everything now. Thanks again for your suggestions they did help. I will update you as it goes on. Any body have something else to add?
Thanks

Out of curiosity, is it a K26-6 , -8, or something totally different? I'm looking at a 951 (like I need another p-car) and I'm thinking about the various turbos I could put on it.

Yes, but it's only my opinion. It sort of pains me, to see that someone is going to rebuild an engine, not because it needs it, but only because they "thought it would be a good time" to do it. My school of thought on that is: If the engine is not showing signs that it needs to be rebuilt, leave it alone.

Jrboulder its a K26-6. wild man it has 180,000 on it and the previous owner let it sit for 7 years in a back yard with old gas in it. There is no question that it needed to be rebuilt. I do thank you for your opinion.

I wouldn't be afraid of the miles, and I wouldn't order parts until you pull the head. You'll range from pleasantly surprised to looking for another short block.
I also don't see new head nuts and washers in that kit--those are replaced every time. Also, I bought parts from Zims, *********, ******** and pelican in pieces and saved money. Kits aren't always a GREAT deal, but they are a timesaver. I probably saved $250 by shopping around but I spent a good 12 hours doing it...

Thanks pettybird! I will go your route. I will spend the extra time looking around to make sure I get everything I need. I don't like to do anything half ass. Thanks

Yeah, if you can, pull the head and have a good look at the cylinders. If possible, pull the rod bearing caps off and see if the bearings haven't been damaged or spun. Then you'll have an idea of what you're up against and what you need to buy. It would be even better to get the thing to run and do a leakdown test to see if you should even mess with the cylinders, since these motors can usually go a but longer with no work. If it's a project for restoring the engine to 100%, just check the cylinders and rod journals to make sure you won't need to find another motor.
Oh, and stay away from the black victor reinz rear main seal. Many have had bad luck with it, including myself. Either the red Kaco or even better, the red/black Elring seal is 10x worth the extra money. Also, use the brown vitton valve stem seals. The black ones that come in the gasket kit aren't nearly as durable in the long run.
