need help

Okay, my 944 project is rolling along... i bought the parts car for 1K, and my mechanic is going to buy whatever i don't use for $500...

...the problem is that the guy that I was going to have do the body work and painting quoted me like $2K for everything... I really don't want to pay $2K for a paint job.

Can anyone hook me up with a good body shop - especially one that deals with Porsches - in the central CT area?

PLEASE help!

Actually, for a good quality paint job, 2k is pretty cheap (at least around me) I've been quoted anythere from 2500 - 3500.

I have a question. What do you plan for this car? It it all original and you plan it as a collector/investment? If so then spend the $2K and get it done right. If not then take the lights, door seals, handles, bumper pads, mirrors and such off the car. Then send it to Macco. They will paint the entire car and do some body work for about $500. Yes not the best paint job but should look good for a few years and save you alot of money.

I am paying 2K plus paint for the restoration of my 82 924.... but I plan to keep the car... so the money is worth it to me. Plus even good shops can do a crap job. My friend who owns a 944S2 had his car repaired at a highly recomended shop in CT and his car was not well preped and there was over spray all over the place that needed to be fixed.

So save your money and get a reasonable paint job from Macco (sp?)

I don't need the whole car repainted... i need about four body panels replaced and those four body panels painted to match my car. Surely this should cost less than 2K...

2 pak paint job is cheap, get it done properly if you want it to last though....the problem with paint is the sealing...they generally back it in an oven for a few hours...car sized oven ....hmmmm...not your local pizza shop type either...Leadfoot

So this car is going to be a keeper or a driver?
Again I would say do not spend the big bucks on the car if you do not plan special things for the car. Of course you could ask the shop (that quoted 2K) how much they would take off if you did the disassembly yourself. Tell them $1250 or some thing with you removing the items I noted above.

Paint is all about labor not so much about the paint itself... the cost that is.

One thing you didn't say was what color the car is. Paint can be very difficult to mach for a metallic color -- like the Zermatt silver for example. Solid colors like white are somewhat easier to mach but you're talking about an older car (and thus older paint) -- the match will always be noticeable even if it looks good at first because the 2 paints will fade at a different rate. It would be better to paint the whole car.

It dosen't sound like you have you a show car there, and you don't want to spend too much on it so I'm voting Macco as well. Just do your own prep work etc. before taking it to them (don't expect a lot of body work out of 'em).

P.S. my local body shop paint starts at $2K for a basic job -- I don't think they will do much body work for that much either. I agree specialty shop that come 'recommended' are often way over rated! I've seen some 'Porsche' shops turn out some real stinkers!
