Normal Cam wear?

107000 mi. All lobes show similar wear. Basically just discoloration as far as I can tell.

sorry if the pics are a little fuzzy, Using the flash washed the pics out too much!

Thanks,
Bruce

Thanks for the quick response Rick

Here's the only other pic I took before I installed the cam tower. This one had some glare from the flash.

The dark area on the right side of the lobe is a dark gray triangle shaped area. Looks like the bright finish has worn off. I didn't pull the cam from the tower as it was a simple gasket replace to stop oil leak. All the lifters looked new.

Test the lifters by trying to press the "button" down inside each lifter.

Usually, the "harder" it is to push the button the better. It proves the lifters are full of oil in the inner chamber. If they are really soft you might want to look for used.

Keep the lifters in the same order as removed!
Keep the lifters soaked in oil with the "pin hole" facing up to let out air. I use a needle to fill the lifters via the pin hole and then store.

INA lifters worth messing with?

Much more in search

Thanks John,
I didn't press on the lifters. I did keep them separate and covered in oil while they were out of the tower. I was commenting on the contact surface with the cam.
They were flat and shiny and did not show any of the kind of wear evidenced on the cam.

Bruce

I've wondered what that indentation is myself. I've seen it on two different cams and I think it's normal. Maybe some kind of oiling slot or something? I wish Porsche had listed lobe height specs in the FSM. There's no way to know how much wear the cam has except by having a new one to measure.

Hey guys,

thanks for all the responses. I spoke with someone who sells new and used Porsche parts. He said it was completely normal wear and that all the used cams he has seen had the same wear pattern.

Patrick,
I've used Brad Penn 20w50 for the last few years. The PO used Pennzoil 10w40 (he lived in a colder climate than I do ). I would think that the car has used 10w40 for most of its life.
