Smile Just Bought A 924

Greetings pelicans,

I just got done purchasing a 1977 Martini & Rossi edition 924!
95 HP of 4-speed fury
This is one of the first 200 (193) USA '77 924.
It is very nice and it has the 150 mph speedo and lots of spares.
Even the A/C works!

A couple of problems:
The alternator is not charging even though it tests as fine.
I assume the cables are bad.

The shifting is sloppy. I alredy fixed this on my 44

What I plan to do:
Full tune up
new timing belt
fix the obvious problems
new brake hoses

Now I have a VW and an Audi!

Great!

924Board.org :: Index is THE best 924 site.

924s need upgraded battery cables, not the basic (cheap) autopart store 4 guage.

I owned a basic 77.5 & 79 924 for years.

Congratulations.
John

Thanks Guys!

I will take a bunch of pics today when I get her home.

I bought this to be a DD while I get the 944 sorted out (AOS, MM, Belts)
Plus I love the 924 shape.
I bought it for a song so I could probably sell it for a profit if I got it to charge.

If I had to guess I would say that the cable going from the alternator to the starter is bad but a multimeter will tell me for sure.

Congrats! The M&R 924 is my personal favorite 924. We need pics!

Include the injector O-rings in your tune-up. CIS hates vac leaks but it's a very reliable FI system.

Cool car!

Where did you buy it out of? There was a guy on Rennlist for a while who had one, he was down in the Springs. I think his name was Chris....he had a well built 951 as well.

I would head down to Carquip on Arapahoe and buy what you need for it.

Thanks Slam!

It seems like there was some pretty recent injection work done but I will do the O-rings anyway, it can't be too hard.

I am wondering how hard it is to change the clutch cable. I would like to change it for reliability and I think it is pretty worn and creating a lot of friction.

If you're feeling a drag on the clutch it could also be the TO bearing, but the nice thing about the 924 is that you can pop off the clutch inspection plate and have a look. You can regrease the TO guide tube and that might help. The cable is pretty straightforward but you'll have to be a contortionist under the dash.

We're all waiting for pics over 'there'! Has the car still got the dash plaque?

Thanks!

I bought it from a guy who is into muscle cars in Arvada. I go over to carquip twice a week for the 44 so I can only imagine with 2 p-cars.

Here is a picture from the ad:

Cool, welcome!

Re: the alternator - there's a 3-pin white nylon plug at the back of the cam cover, on the firewall; I had a regular problem with bad contacts in this keeping the alternator from charging on my old car.

Check/clean your grounds too.

Often the clutch pedal pivot needs greasing too; fix this (whatever the problem turns to be) soon, before you tear the sheetmetal of the firewall!!! Very expensive to have someone stitch it back up!!

Primitive, simple, and fun. Hard to beat a 924! Can't wait to finish mine.

Thank you

For $1125 it will have to do

I don't see why people don't take care of them as much, My favorite car has 86 HP (take a guess) and it is way more loved than the poor 924.

Yeah mine used to be a big pile of rust. Now it has come a long way. It's too bad, they are such great cars.

What kills me is the people who are too stupid to keep track of the title. in the last year I have seen at least a dozen 24s get sold as parts cars because they don't have the title.

If am understanding this correctly, the body is galvanized but the bolt on parts are not.
there is a quarter sized spot on the nose panel that has no paint on it but it looks like zinc not steel and no rust. It makes me wonder if it had been replaced.

Wow, that car's gorgeous! Nice find!!

Correct, only the bolt-on body panels aren't galvanized.

Agree with the others, that is a nice clean car. Good score!

Is that some add on wiring or relay from the PO next to the alt?

Also check the rubber alt bushes and belt adjustment, since when the bushes go it reduces the tension. Also there should be a grounding strap from the alt to the block. The B+ cable from alt goes to the starter B+ and from there to the battery. This cable and the D+ (idiot light & exciter) wire often get burnt & corroded with the exhaust manifold heat.
