Should I part it out?
Hi, Im normally on the 911 forums. I bought a slightly rusty 87 944. It came with a spare engine ( sold ) and spare transaxle ( keeping for a track spare ) and a bunch of other spare parts - aluminum control arms, etc, winter\summer tires.
Ive ended up with some other cars so I dont know what to do with this one. I would need about $1800 to break even on the car. Interior is also a bit rough. Im in Edmonton, AB so there is only a small group of 944 people near. Can I part out the car and break even in a reasonable period of time? Do I sell it as a whole? The car was autocrossed by my friend, so there are improvements, bushings, turbo sway bars, upgraded springs, etc. Car runs fine, ac removed, etc.

Was this the black one on kijiji, by any chance?
Try Scott Lawrence at Crammond Automotive (he's listed in the phone book) - he may be able to move some stuff for you. Right now the 944 market on Alberta is very weak - I've watched cars sit for months on kijiji, usually because they're overpriced. To get $1800 out of it in parts will take you the better part of at least a year or so, and it's work. I'd try to sell it whole with spares. How bad is the rust?

Rust bubbles under door mirror and rear quarters have a small whole on each side. Its fixable. No not a black one. Car needs paint and to do paint right it needs to be stripped and the surface rust ( rock chips ) needs to be done with a few patches welded in. It was a daily driver, tweaked for autocross. Summer tires, winter tires on their own rims plus a few other spare rims\tires.
My son wants this car and not the one I want him to have because 'its a Porsche'. Its just way more reasonable to start with a car not needing body work. However if he puts a lot of elbow grease into it who knows what it will be to him. It certainly would be a nice car for a 'kid' however if he fixes the paint, etc.

If your son really likes the car and is motivated enough to fix it, why not let him? It makes a world of difference having invested your own sweat in a vehicle. Have you got a place to do the work, like a heated garage or whatnot?
