special tool needed for strut spring removal/install?

I'll be replacing front struts soon...

www.9xauto.com advertises a special 22mm socket required for removal of spring/strut...$69 includes spring compressor

is this tool really necessary, will it save time, or can an regular deep socket work just the same?

thanks

You don't need any special tools.

If you want to save some money you can get a deep offset wrench from sears for $20 (mebe cheaper elsewhere?) and get the spring compressors from autozone on their loaner program. Since most people won't do this often it's not important to own the tool IMO.

Anyway, it was easier than I had imagined. Also, you can do this easier without removing the bottom camber & alignment bolts on the strut housing. Theres a tech article on rennlist in their tech session about it that tells you how to do it in the car instead of removing the whole shebang. I wish I had found it before messing up my alignment.
