968 belts

Is there any good news when woking on your car? It seems when ever i inspect or work on one thing another two appear.

I have an 87 951, 95K on suspension and chassis, with a 968 engine, about 70k miles on it. It was installed about 2k miles ago with new belts plugs gaskets, the works. I have been looking how to adjust the tension on the timing belt with the hydroulic tensioner. I can't seem to find any info. I got the cam belt tensioned properly, hopefully.

Is the timing belt on the engine "set it and forget it?"

And oil is leaking from the seals now, lower it looks like. It's still to cold to do a better inspection

the timing belt on the 968 is hydraulically tensioned, and needs no adjustment

the balance belt must be manually adjusted, every year or 15k miles, whichever comes first

belt life on the 968 is 3 years or 45k, whichever comes first - do NOT let belts stay on there for more than 3 years, no matter how few miles you have on them - you won't like the all too common results

Seals,
If you have oil leaking from the front crank shaft seal, it should be replaced ASAP.

The crank pullys will spray the oil on the belts. If this has happened, replace the oil soaked belts when you replace the front crank seal.

"any good news"?? Yes, once repaired you will have a fine car and the smile will come back.

On the 968 engine the Balance Belt should be 18MM wide. If you put on one for a 944 keep an eye out for fraying. I picked this bit of info up on the 968 board as I just bought a 968.

Cheers,
Larry
