Mounting 4 pt harness to sport seats
I just installed my Brey Krause harness bar in the S2 tonight and want to add some 4 point harnesses. I want to keep the factory sport seats in car so i know a sub belt is out. Any one have any experience? I am thinking quick disconnects for the seat section so I can get them out of the way easier when street driving. bK MAKES THESE FUNNY INNER SEAT BELT MOUNTS WHICH COULD BE AN OPTION TOO.

be aware that most sanctioning bodies no longer allow harnesses to be used, even in DE events, with these kinds of seats, and now require a pass through hole in the seat for the shoulder belts
they do still allow the factory 3 point belts to be used the reasoning is that the shoulder belts slip off too easily |

Agree with Flash on this one. 4 points are actually LESS safe than 3 points, as they prevent upper body rotation and often cause you to instead just slide under the harnesses (Since there is no anti-submarine belt).
Even worse if you don't have the correct seat for a harness, which is what you are suggesting doing with the stock sport seat. My recommendation: Stay with your stock 3 point and be happy. Cheers, Keith

+10, that setup is extremely dangerous and you are better off with factory belts.
Maybe you can hang a golf towel or something on your harness bar, or mount a camera to capture your commute.

i'm not even sure the brey krause bar passes anymore - there are some new rules in some organizations that are prohibiting harness bars of small diameter, and also ones that don't have a triangulation point to prevent rotation
any of you DE gurus care to chime in on that one? |

In all seriousness, for occasional track work with stock belts, I point people towards this:
CG-Lock Performance Add-on for your Seat belt

What would you guys suggest as a good harness bar? I recently got one of those reclinable racing seats with the holes for the shoulder harnesses and would like to eventually put a harness in.

the redline unit is a decent harness bar, but it is not to be confused with a roll bar, which requires landing pads for vertical load - it is removable and reasonably easy to use - it also adds the benefit of some chassis stiffening

I agree with all said. With a stock seat only run a stock seat belt. You need a seat with shoulder belt holes and you need a 5 or 6 pt belt.
Harness bars would depend on the event. For autocross it's not really a big issue. As for track, I would do a roll bar if your already spending the money and effort to do a bar. It will cost more, but is a smart call if you have a harness (since your roof will crush and you won't be able to bend down like you can with a 3 pt belt). All depends on money and use. I wouldn't waste your time on a 4 pt system with stock seats though. You'll only be able to drive it on the street and just risking your safety. |

That CG lock is amazing. I rode along with as a passenger one and was thoroughly impressed.
I would not run 4 point harnesses in any vehicle. I use the harness bar as a mount for my camera, and that's it. I just use the three point belt for DE; the CG lock is on my tax return to-do list. And Rudeboy-a lot of DE no longer allow reclining race seats, either. They only allow one-piece seats or factory seats, as the cheap reclining ones can fold (with you in it!) in a crash.

Thanks all for chiming in, quite aggressively too.
I have run a bit of DE years ago with a 911 I just sold. Had a BK bar in my targa with stock seats and a 5 pt harness. Drilled hole in front of seat for 5th point. Ran it for 6 years. Loved the setup but times have changed I see. No putting sub belt over front of seat anymore. Sounds like drilling a hole in front of seat will not pass anymore. Can't see cutting a hole through the center seat bottom of nice leather stock sport seats is a good option, but may consider that. Did it on a pair of seats in the past I have a CG lock I used for autocross and it was OK. So I either wasted my money on a BK bar or I need to get a good set of aftermarket seats.

i would add a roll bar with racing seats and 5 point belts or better if your thinking of running it on a track . if your only doing auto-x then i would just keep it as is . if you have ever been in a car that has rolled (i have ) then you know 1st hand that the bend down theory is a joke to keep from getting crushed by the roof ! think of your self as the beebee in the whistle !!! maybe you could bend down if there was a semi truck on the track with you that you were going to hit ? but if you have time to bend down then you may have the time to drive around or hit the brakes ? 5 and 6 point racing belts are not street legal so you could get pulled over for them .

mplatt.. indeed times have changed and so have PCA regulations. Of note, its not JUST the sub strap.. but the need for correct holes in the deat back to run belts over your shoulders. Porsche factory sport seats are, in essence, too WIDE and it is very possible that the shoulder belts would seperate in a collision and allow your chest to fly forward and hit the steering wheel, for instance.
I know for a time folks would also run "sternum" straps to keep the two should belts closer together. This has proven to be questionable as well. For an occasional DE'er, stock belt/seat is best. If you know you will be doing a lot of DEs, then a proper aftermarket seat and 5/6pt harnesses would be better, but more importantly, would be required.
