Timing belt tension check tool
I have a 1987 Porsche 944 non turbo. I'm doing the timing belt, water pump, and pulleys. I found on ebay a tension checking tool from Mechanicstopia model number H-EN0136. I was wondering if any of you have tried this tool and how it stacks up against the infamous P9201.

Sorry I can't comment of the other tool as I have the P9201 and enjoy using it. I am not afraid to really did into the engine. Having the tool has probably saved $4000 in paid vehicle maintenance thus far. I think it is worth every penny.

I brought this up on another board when I first saw this tool. It was on E-Bay. Someone said they had tried it and it was too large and had some kind of calibration numbers not easily converted to Porsche requirements (whatever that meant). I use a Krikit, the thumb and forefinger twist test and the water pump pulley twist test as a check against each other and nothing has broken yet.

Gotta agree with VINMAM on this issue. Been using the "twist" method for 25+ years on mine & other 944/924S .Belt repacement & retension is essential but the very expensive P9201 tool is not. IMO

This may help you out. In 87 944 went an auto tensioner for the timing belt. The counter balance belt you need to adjust.

The "auto tensioner", AKA the spring belt tensioner, or more accurately, the "mechanical belt tensioner" (Porsche) has provided another "tool" to adjust the belt tension. Sadly, the mechanical belt tensioner is not accurate. The novice mechanic who trusts this will pay for their lack of knowledge. There are so many things wrong with this method. Such as... Spring tension factory setting and current "memory" of the spring after years in fixed position. OR Initial belt tension on the passenger side of the belt will skew the "mechanical belt tension" adjustment to severe cam belt over tightening. OR, (3,4,5,6...) You cannot trust the spring mechanical auto tensioner. John

If you know what you are doing, you can tighten the belt(s) without a tool. The so called auto tensioner, really isn't unless you properly calibrate it. IOW the auto tensioner is notoriously inaccurate. The auto tensioner gets you to within the ballpark and properly sets the tension at a point other than the tdc. Better to set the feel by ear and feel. Either a shade above or below where the auto tensioner sets it.
Save your money and get a good set of triple squares, some 27 thin wrenches, fw lock, and a pin sprocket wrench. The 9201.... neat bit of overly obsessive toolbox candy.

FYI: I tried to buy the P9201 from Pelican about a week ago and they couldn't get it from Porsche. So the original and best P9201 may no longer be an option.

SUNSET | Portland, Oregon Porsche & Audi Dealership, Parts & Service I ended up purchasing a barely used unit from a fellow Pelican for 1/2 the cost of new. Speedy
