how can I tell if a trans is lsd?

how can I tell if a 87 944 S has lsd?? I know on a 911 if you jack up the car and spin one wheel if other side goes in opposite direction its not lim slip but when i spun one wheel on this car other side did nothing.

my thoughts were that it is infact lim slip and would catch if first tire started spinning faster, right? also, what is a lim slip trans worth? tia

lsd test is same on any car.

u could also have a LSD that's so worn it doesn't work right anymore.

You can also check the part number stamped into the case.

vintagecarlover 03-23-2011 07:31 AM

where is the part number located on trans and also where to check the part number to see if lim slip?

Rasta Monsta 03-23-2011 07:47 AM

You part number will start with AGR, if the box is stock LSD from an 87 S.

Location of stampings shown HERE.

thanks rasta. any idea of value with and w/o lsd?

If you can't vouch for condition (i.e., shifts smoothly, all syncros functional, no whining/whirring), I wouldn't pay more than $100-150 for non-LSD, basically as a core. Frankly, a unknown condition LSD box has even greater possible repair expense, because you have to do the regular overhaul stuff as well as changing out clutch packs. $300, max?
