how can I tell if a trans is lsd?

how can I tell if a 87 944 S has lsd?? I know on a 911 if you jack up the car and spin one wheel if other side goes in opposite direction its not lim slip but when i spun one wheel on this car other side did nothing.

my thoughts were that it is infact lim slip and would catch if first tire started spinning faster, right? also, what is a lim slip trans worth? tia

You can also check the part number stamped into the case.

You part number will start with AGR, if the box is stock LSD from an 87 S.

Location of stampings shown HERE.

If you can't vouch for condition (i.e., shifts smoothly, all syncros functional, no whining/whirring), I wouldn't pay more than $100-150 for non-LSD, basically as a core. Frankly, a unknown condition LSD box has even greater possible repair expense, because you have to do the regular overhaul stuff as well as changing out clutch packs. $300, max?
