fuel line replacement

Hi everyone,
I posted awhile back on "fumes" turns out it is the fuel lines on top of the tank.
I took it back to the dealer where I bought it and of course they would rather me go away, but I have pushed the issue that they sold me a car that is dangerous to drive, and took it to the general manager in effort for them to fix the lines.. cant hurt to push it, right... well the general manager is going to take it up with the dealership owner.. so he says, but it looks like it is a $1800 job... probably mostly labor, I said I would share some of the cost.. that is still up for question on how much, Im going to say they will only cover 25%
So here is my question.. If I choose not to do the share in cost thing...
in dropping all the parts to get to the tank just a labor tasking job, or is there some very technical type issued that have to be dealt with. I know there is a learning curve here.. just trying to stay ahead of it.
thanks for those who reply

We all are wondering what car you might be talking about. Please put vehicle details at least in your post, or even in your sig ("Quick Links" -> "Your Profile").

I'm currently going through this. It's not a difficult job to drop the trans and then the tank, although it is labor intensive. The problem is scope creep.....or WYITs. It's now turned into a clutch job as well, followed by a brake job (new rotors and caliper overhaul) as it's up on the stands anyway, and just discovered my shifter is knackered also - another parts order . Total parts order for all the fuel hoses, check valves, tank rubbers, fittings, etc - somewhere around $500. You could do it a little cheaper as parts are easier to get for you than me (some parts had to come from Germany) and around 1/4 of my costs are freight. Now add the clutch kit, brake stuff, etc,.....the list goes on and the price goes up. Although, It'll be a good thing when it's finished .

Cheers,

Did you get a parts catalog or repair manual?
You can either order all hoses, some are just regular fuel hose available at parts store, or drop the tank and figure out which ones are leaking, then order from parts house and replace.

ok, here is the deal now...
The dealer offered to buy the car back... Such a simple problem with a very high price on labor. It handles so amazing, I really hate to give it back. The a/c is the old R12 system also, and I would guess the the compressor is needing to be replaced in conjunction with converting it over to r134, hard to say what that price tag would entail. Also its been 8 yrs since the timing belt was replaced with only 7K miles on it, but from what you have told me on here, the time value has overridden the miles, so thats probably another $1K.
I paid $10,800 for it so, if it was a $6K car, I would have let someone else do the work and be happy. since its a 10K car, I dont want to afford some mech to raise the price of car more than its worth.
Anybodies thoughts here?? I have not made a decision yet. Kind of sad..
This one has 64K miles on it.

Is it leaking on the ground? I doubt it is your hoses. . .more likely the vapor system isn't functioning properly. You should get the opinion of someone who has worked on a lot of 944s.

The car migth handle well & be fun to drive around but so are hundreds of S2 around in decent shape with all maintenance done which will give the same satisfaction.I'll say keep it if you could DIY all labour & maintenance but it's not the case .Plus something else you migth not be aware on the S2 that has to be done beside the belts /water pump ect ect ,it's the tensioner /pads & chain which is very important if you don't want to end with a ruin head.Take your money back friend while you can.Something sound a little funny when a dealer offer you to buy a car he has just sold. And the kind of money you paid for that car you can get yourself a darn nice S2 your even getting in 968 territory. The handling migth of impress you but it's because you are not use the the 944s handling, which is one of the best of any car on the road even by today standard. If you do look for another car may I suggest you take a look here on Pelican or Rennlist first before going to a dealer, you'll be surprise the amount of nice cars there is for sale by members on both forums.

Thank you ernie... I think I will take back my money.
Thank you for the heads up on other 944's, (non dealerized) gosh, the red 1990 is very nice, and driveable.. nice.
I really cannot get rid of the feeling I had driving this 944... I've been driving big cars for so long and trucks, I forgot how much fun driving is supposed to be. Not just transportation to me anymore..

+1 let them buy the car back. you will not regret it when you find a better quality example. luckily they are offering you the option of returning it, sounds like you would have been in for much more than you had found yet - there is always more that you don't see in the beginning.

thanks for the positive input. I will admit I had speculations before I drove the car home, but I was like a kid in a candy shop. I rarely buy cars, it seems they all come to me, as weird as that sounds, its true. I was a real motorhead when I was young but as the years rolled on, I just wanted comfortable, dependable transportation while raising my family. The experience of driving this 944 excelerated my lost love for speed and control. Im afraid Im hooked, but, I will not sink a lot of time and money in the wrong vehicle... so, now, Im returning the car to the dealer that sold it to me... it was a big issue and the problem went to the top dog, the owner, so now, Im on the hunt with a new perspective and knowledge of these wonderful engineered cars.

Thanks

^^ Glad we could be of some help to you taking the rigth decision ,944s are very addictive & you'll probably be sitting behind the wheel of another one in the near future, but this time with a little more knowledge about it.If you do find what you want don't be afraid to ask questions here on the forum, sending pics of the (ext-i nt & engine bay) of the car prior to is a big help ,this will help peoples here to give you some hint about the car your buying .They are so use to them that they migth spot something your not aware off,I'm afraid I'll repeat myself once more but the golden rule is to get a PPI (Post Purchase Inspection) by an independent source (meaning a mechanic or shop that knows 944s ,specially the 16 valves cars).May I suggest you edit your avatar with your location this way if a member spot something in your area which is worth buying they can lead you to it ,good luck finding the rigth one.

hate to nit pick but usually i call a PPI a "Private or PRE purchase inspection" as you would want this done BEFORE purchasing the car, not post purchase as a private party is under no obligation to buy back the car, dealerships marginally more obligated but still not guaranteed.
