968 interest

So I think I got sick when I came over here from the 928 side. I caught a bug. Lol. I have been eyeing a 968 cabriolet. Id like to know ups and down and general opinions about the 968 and the very.

Yes 968 can make you sick and pretty darn fast. And it's a bug which is hard to shove aside.Well what can I tell you except that having own one for two year now, I beleive after owning a variety of them from 914/911/944 it's one of the best if not the best Porsche around (*my personal opinion). If your looking for an over powered over engineered P car don't buy one, what the 968 does is get you from point A to B without tires spinning or drama. The 3.0 ltr vario cam has plenty of torque & will get you in the three digit numbers in no time at all,if you are use to a 928 you'll find the 968 more nibble, even in stock form road holding is almost perfect with the add of upgrade such as 17" wheels -rigth tires-M030 sway bar & little suspension tweaks your up there with the best, warning do not (over modified it) ,take a look around see what other peoples are running with their cab & ask question before investing money in such or such a mod.Mechanically wise well it will be about the same maintenance as any 944s out there plus the 16 valves side of it. One of the issue that come up more often with the Cab versus the Coupe is problems with the top mechanisme with is probably normal on any cabriolets. For more infos check this Porsche 968 sports and high performance cars successor to 944, 968 Porsche Club or General information on the Porsche 968 (tech spec) on the Uk link will give both specs for the six speed & trip.

How bad is the body flex on the cab? Will it still corner well? I live in colorado. Lots of places to squeak tires.

BK underbrace and a good strut tower bar goes a long way to tieing everything up. Avoid anything larger than 17" wheels; I know several cab owners who went to 18"s and switched back. The factory wouldn't build a MO30 cab, but many like myself have added MO30 sways and springs. LSD is a good addition as well, helps on hairpins. Get the Clubsport steering wheel, it adds a huge amount of feel over the stock wheel.

I believe only the ROW 968 cab had seat in the back (migth have been an option) US model didn't, not 100% sure but I think Damian did install rear seats in his yellow cab.Difference between the two has to do with seat belts anchor points. Are you sure the one you've seen in AZ is not a ROW model, such as this one (belong to a Rennlister ).

^^Seem like a nice cab low mileage & decently price ,five speed cab are somewhat rare so it's a plus.Do they have maintenance records up to date ? if so could be a very interesting buy, look like Boxster 16" wheels on it.The rear seat I don't know & it's hard to say ,could be the real thing could be an installation.I'm not that familiar with the cab since I own a coupe ,.Maybe Damian could chip in with more infos about that rear seats. If really interested about that cab & want more infos no problems. Jeff who keep the 968 registry for us will be able to tell you when it was born (date-options ect ect.

you'll get a lot of differing opinions, but mostly people like the car - the cab can be as stiff as the hardtop, if you add the braces available - i can put 3 wheels in the air with one jack point on mine, with no discernable twisting at the door latches - suspension choices are plenty - 18s have gotten a bad rap, but can be fine if you choose the right suspension and tires, and really wrong if choose poorly, as many who didn't know any better have done - mine rides as smooth as glass on my 18s - lots of power toys available too

I don't think you'll be able to find US model with a rear seat (unless it was special order or a DIY job).Eigth years ago Jeff did a rear seat mod on his 92 cab & here are the results, even if you bougth one without rear seats you can install some. It's feasible and been done
& when needed peoples will guide you in,Jeff DIY look darn close to the one in the red 968 if you ask me.

Looking to buy a broken car. (Its cheaper that way) preferably tb failure. Half the fun of driving them is knowing you built it yourself.

You got to be kidding (it's cheaper that way-preferably TB failure)what about if that timing failure did damage the valves or the pistons, your not looking at an 8valves motor here but a 16valves which is more complex & lot more expensive to fix if the head or block as suffer damage, unless you got a very thick wallet find one in running condition ,inquire about the prize of a 944S/S2/968 head, that is if you can find one in good shape or better yet how much will it the cost for parts needed to rebuilt an 968 engine or buy a use one.I will agree on one thing with you ,let's say you find a 968 without maintenance being done on it & you can DIY the belts/rollers/water pump/tensioner/pads & chain & knock down the purchase price on it I'll say go ahead buy it ,but one with timing belts failure no way my friend.

Hmmmmm. Id like to disagree with several things you said. First. Understand that I am a skilled mechanic. I have a 928 with a 32v motor so I know exactly what im saying. Im not interested in rebuilding a motor. Id buy a used motor and shoehorn it in there way before I start screwing around with an alusil block or anything of that nature. But it is far cheaper to build them then to buy them and if you are paying more than you are paying too much. If I could find a decent example for 5-6 k that needed tb then sure id be in. Bit I can buy one thatneeds a motor for far less than that. Just need to find one. Second I feel that your mindset of buy the car with no records that wasn't maintained in bassackwards. If they didn't maintain the car then what else didn't they do? Have they ever even changed the plugs or trans fluid? Did they even do oil changes at regular intervals? If im buying something I can bet wasn't taken care of id much rather buy it for 1k knowing that its gonna need love then to pay 7-8 and then end up doing a clutch and tube bearings and 6 months later you spin that oil starved bearing. I've read all the stories. Buy them at premium price properly maintained and documented or buy them for nothig and "while you're in there" it back together. It saves money. If I want to keep the 928 and the 944 then I've got to do it myself. Otherwise id have to sell old red and she's just been put back together will all 86.5 guts down to the complete wiring harness and abs add (I had a totaled 86.5 that didn't get into the motor) I even swapped to the s4 suspension. Im not ready to sell it. so........ anyway. Its all about how much you can or are willing to do yourself and how good of a shopper you are. Id even buy an engine fire car. Because I have the ability to sort it all out. Those are my opinions and im not saying you're completly wrong. You can get in over your head. Im the kind of guy that will do it just cause you say it shouldn't be done.

Let me add though that if the engine was not at high revs chances are the pistons are good and a head job will get you a running car with years of good life. These cars are worth fixing.
