Which way is the arrow supposed to point? I took the old one out before looking at the position of the thermostat.

The line that has the thermostat you are asking about goes to the turbocharger after joining up with another that goes to the reservoir. After they join, the line goes to the thermostat that controls the auxiliary water pump for the turbo. The portion that goes to the reservoir is the return line to the reservoir because you can see the water flowing when the pump runs. Therefore it seems to me that it is a return line so flow is to main water pump in that line. Moreover, the auxiliary pump thermostat should be downstream of the turbocharger. It would not make sense to measure the temperature of the coolant upstream of what is being cooled. Therefore it is a return line so the flow is to the main water pump in that line.

Hope this helps with the arrow. One would think the arrow should point to the pump.

Hi Speedracer, hey the lil thermo has to have the spring part facing the waterpump, (in otherwords if it looked like a mushroom the base goes toward the engine) it will only open when the waterpump coolant gets hot , if this lil themo fails it will keep the car from getting up to temp and possibly letting it run hot
To seal it I used some RTV only a lil bit as well as the O ring,
I would test this B4 putting it back into the car use some boiling water and drop it inyou will see how it works.
PS make shure you use Phosphate free coolant it will say it the container if it is ........Stan

Stan and Lawrence-

Thanks for the info and advice.

Stan - What is RTV and every diagram I look at has the spring side or "mushroom base" away from the engine and actually in the housing.

Hi RTV = Room Temperature Vulcanising. used for making gaskets and such made by Permatex, I would use the orange stuff.
You might call it silicone sealant as well

I am looking at the picture in my Vertex catalog and in volume #14 front cover has a goog looking blond with a leg sticking out while sitting in a Porsche Cab,on page 29 you will see that it clearly shows the li thermo base facing towards the front, this is INCORRECT, I even asked the mechanic at Vertex about this and they confirmed it is backwards.
For the thermo to open it must reach 180 deg or so it will only do this if the spring part is into the waterpump, if you trace the line you will see it goes to the turbo housing this will not transfer heat to open the thermostat........Stan

Stan-

Thanks again for the research.

You know, every picture I see has the thermostat facing the wrong way - including PET! Thanks for checking with your mechanic on this one.
I will make sure to put it in the right-wrong way?!?

It sure makes more sense to have the sensor side in the pump rather than in the line.
