Engine Starting Help!!!
I started a 944 project on the 7th of May 2010. The 85.5 needed a new oil cooler and little did I know I would end up replacing the clutch, motor mounts, entire cooling system and replacing every cracked hose in between! Now 372 days later and many, many parts replaced, I sat down in the drivers seat with key in hand ready to start her up. Key engaged, I turned her over and all worked except I had no fuel pressure at all??? Nothing.
I rechecked all electrical connections and swapped the "mark speed sensor" connections as I thought they were mismatched. Afterward the engine would not even click. Lights but nothing at all!!! Here are some of my observations: 1. Checked all fuses in the box, all good. Have not checked relays. 2. Car was running when purchased, barely, but it ran. 3. Yes, there is fuel in the tank! 4. Installed alarm relay on the DME box was clicking away. Does this have the ability to shut down the engine? 5. New plugs, points, wires, ICV and coil. 6. Fuel filter replaced, checked arrow and it is good. 7. New battery. Any thoughts on where I can start checking? Are the mark speed indicators involved? Which I doubt seriously. Is the fuel issue at the MAF or at the pump? I hope it's not the DME. If so, is there a few simple test points on the chip? |

theres a "no start checklist" somwhere in this forum.
did you check the fuel pump/starter/grounds? when you did the reference sensor did the tach bounce slightly when it did turn over?

Great, I will check the grounds and the no start checklist. I have no answer on the initial start tach question... All has gone down hill, just gauge lights and alarm indicators now, no turn over in the motor at all, just a damp, dark "click" when ignition key is turned to the right...

Sounds like power delivery. Check engine ground strap. Check power points at batt and starter. Clean and tighten.

Thanks for all the posts. Good advice so far. Grounds are good.

check ignition switch, could possibly have a crack in it.

Checked the starter today... Component failure!
Hope fuel pump has not thrown in the towel... |

Loose ground nut on the starter. Back in operation. Glad for friends checking up on me!
Just need to find why the fuel pump is not engaging... I jumpered the DME relay at 87, 87b and 30, and still no fuel... |

Im a 928 guy so im not sure that is the correct relay but assuming it is then either the fuel lump is bad or the wires are disconected. The pump gets is ground from the same point as the tailights so if they are working then it should be gettig ground and the b+ comes directly from the relay. If you send b+ down that line and the pump isn't running then it failed. They're easy to change.

Fuel pump was the culprit. Now it purrs right along! Took a few minutes to get up to bar, but the pressure is just fine and holding.
I ran some diesel in the engine to clean out the years of gunk. First time it ran in over a year! More adjustments and final shakedown cruise next week. Thanks for all the help! |
