Thumping Noise

Hey Gang, I just acquired my first 944 and it was GREAT to find this site. I bought a 85.5 auto and I have a problem with an intermittent thumping from the right front. It doesn't seem to be related to RPM, moving speed or braking. I hear it setting still in the driveway or sometimes driving. It almost sounds like a duct door slapping open and closed but its loud. The car is smooth at idle and at all ranges on the highway. I'm at a loss....... any help would be greatly appreciated.

I had an intermittent thumping from the right front. My front struts were shot.

I do not know if you planned to get an alignment or wheels with your 944, but you should check the struts and the front "A" /control arms for bushing wear. These are common areas. Check all rubber.

Check the rubber bushings on the front sway bar.

GL & welcome
John

Thanks for the response AZ but I can't figure out why it would do this setting still in the driveway. It seems suspention problems would be noticed in motion. Is there a possability it is the flex plate?

By sitting still I guess you have the engine running.

Time to go to Harbor Freight and buy the cheap stethoscope. If you do not have a store near you get a piece of hose and put it to your ear and go from part to part.

The flex plate is not something you want to go bad== $1200 just for the flex plate and a lot of labor.

Check the cruise control unit. Mine made a clicking noise that would drive me nuts.

How about a video? It sounds like you are saying its loud? What's loud to you? What pitch? By thump I think of a tank firing a round from a distance. (Live near big army base) could it be a rogue heater flap? That wouldn't be very loud but it would he distinct and could be described as a thump. That could also explain its seemingly random appearance. Be a little more descriptive and try to catch the sound live.

I just used "rogue heater flap in a sentace. Top that. Lol"

sway bar bushing in the mount/brace. it's a piece of rubber directly under the power steering tank that love to get leaked on. they deteriorate and fall out of the mount and it thumps pretty good.

i can't imagine what it could possibly be at a stop. the cruise control would not be engaged at a stop/idle so that can be ruled out.

heater vents would likely not be able to open in the first place if they are weak enough to slam shut enough for a loud thump to be made. without video/audio like was mentioned above we can't really know what "loud" means to the OP.

OP, do you still have the original radio installed? when they go bad they can short current to the speakers which makes a pretty loud thumping noise.

You guys are great, thanks for all the feed back. I'm crawling under it tomorrow. I'll check all these suggestions. 8Ball, I was thinking curse control as well. Mine will not hold speed but will accelerate if I hold the lever. I opened the survo as advised on another tread on the site. I noticed that the link-ball lever was free floating before I opened it. I cleaned the contacts on the circut board and reassembled with the retention spring in place. Didn't fix the cruse but the noise is coming from that area. Fway, I eplaced the A/C compressor two weekends ago and found the rear P/S mount bolt missing (the one with a bushing aroung it). I'll check the swaybar busing tomorow. I'll let you'all know what I find. Still looking for suggestions. Thanks again!

OH, The noise is kind of like a rim shot on a snare drum. It veries in rythum and is not consistant with car in gear, rolling or not, A/C on or off or anything I can figure out........

Ok, the swaybar bushing was fine. No P/S leaks. I checked the air recirculation doors on the blower cage and vacume is good. I disconected the cruse control cable and so far so good. I'll update in a week or so.
