Grrrr STRUT question!!! 944na -> 951

I have my front suspension apart...... ready to put my suspension back together when..................

I have an 86na (aluminum control arms....)

I have the spindle, hub and calipers and discs for an 86 turbo.............

I put the 951 spindle on but the 944na strut mounting bolts are about 1/4"-1/2 inch closer together than the holes on the 951 spindle

2 choices!! either drill the hole a little larger to make the 2 mounting bolts fit.............or buy a set of Turbo Koni's........

What do you figure???? I am getting a sick feeling in my stomach at the thought of grinding away at my strut????

*** MARKSPORT if you are around......... I am pretty sure you are using Turbo struts with your NA conversion.........anyone out there using the NA struts on their conversion??????????

don't grind the strut! what is the part number of the struts you need? i might actaully have a set of those sitting in the hangar and i'd sell them for cheeeap (as they are extras, and i don't NEED them, they've been sitting around for 2 years and i was about to throw them in the classifieds section).

Obin.........

So far what I can gather is that their were many strut and shock combinations..............

All I know is that my NA strut looks like it would fit, but like I mention, the bolt holes on the spindle don't line up...with the holes on the strut

So In an Ideal world I would want the complete assembly of an 86 Turbo...........(strut, spring, insert...etc)

I will try and find a partnumber ..........but even on the PET CD it is confusing as hell................

Alex, I did change to the Koni Turbo Struts at the same time as the brakes. I was told that the turbo and non-turbo brakes were essentially the same other than the valving. Now we know that there is more to it. I don't think you should grind it as it may prevent the strut/spindle from maintaining proper camber. I would look for a turbo strut that matches the rear, ie koni if rear are koni, sach if rear are sach ect. There are the replaceable cartride and the sealed koni, the latter is the ones I got. The spring should remain the same that you already have as it will be the proper match to the rear torsion bar. Hope that helps.

Hi Mark...........

I called a Koni distributor................he had a pair of 86 turbo struts sitting in the back, that someone had converted his front suspension a couple of years ago........

Took one of the spindles and its a perfect match.......

SHould have them in this weekend........and then the fun chore of bleeding the brakes...any suggestions on bleeding??

Also this is the sealed 951 strut (non-replaceable insert). Should I use the spring that came with the TUrbo strut.........or the NA strut?

P.S the KOni distributor told me they no longer make the strut only the inserts for the 951? true?

ANYWAY, only the early '86 951 spindle will bolt to the 83-86 944NA strut. Late '86 951 changed the spindle to strut bolt mount and a 19mm ball joint.

I would use the spring that you currently have on your car as it is the matching rate to the rear torsion bar. I believe that the sealed struts can be rebuilt by Koni or Truechoice, but ask the rep for more detail.

Quad

...early and late 951'S.....never heard of that??

There are early and late 944's......the early 944 having the steel control arm.....but the latter having the 951 control arm

The 951 as far as I know for 86 had the F&S strut which is sealed (that I now have), and another with the KONI insert.....

Thanks
