944 Vacuum Reservior

I'm reassembling a RH Drive (Australia) 1982 Porsche 944 NA that somebody else disassembled. I can't find the Vacuum reservior. It isn't in front of the windscreen in the scuttle. My problem is reconnecting the small vacuum line that comes from the front of the brake booster plug. I've found diagrams that show it going to a T which then goes to the firewall tube that I also can't find & the other line from the T is supposed to go the Vacuum recervior which I also can't locate. Help please.

I'm also having trouble working out the wiring to what looks like a big ballast resistor in about the centre top of the firewall. There's a bunch of brown wires with a flat washer style electrical connection in the area which looks like it should go to one terminal. Does an earth strap go from the other terminal to somewhere on the engine ?

Do you have photos of the bits in question?

Thank you so much for replying. Here are some photos. This is what looks like a big ballast resistor on the firewall with a broken thick black plastic cover. There is a group of 4 wires soldered to a loop style connection nearby but I don't like guessing connections. 2 wires are brown & the other 2 are Brown/yellow stripe. The thing that I think might be Ballast resistor has 2 terminals (both bolts) but only one one terminal has previously been used. The other has a dab of silicone or paint on it. What use could it be if only one end is connected to the 4 brown & brown/yellow wires in the loom ?

And here is my other dilemma. This thin Vacuum hose comes from the centre of the plug attached to the Brake Booster. According to the manual it should go to a "T" . One end of the T is meant to go to the Vacuum Reservoir which is meant to be located in the scuttle in front of the windscreen but in the photo of my scuttle you can see that there is no Vacuum Reservoir and no facility to have ever been one mounted there. The other end of the T is meant to go to a nipple in the firewall and in to heater controls. I can't find this nipple. BTW my 944 is RH Drive (Australia) 1982 year. The engine is a replacement removed from another 944. I've found really good Vacuum Line circuit diagrams on the net - http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a70/dwheeler57/DiagramB.jpg - and images of the Vacuum reservior - vac line in my 1986 944????? - but this Vac Reservoir isn't in my vehicle & doesn't look like there ever was one. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

It is very important to put those little vacuum valves (#7, 12, 15) on in the correct direction as they are one way valves.

BTW something very important I forgot to mention, while working on them grounds you'll be working rigth on top of the bell housing( inspection hole) .If you drop anything in there (either a bolt or small tool ect)your done so make sure you tape that hole or plug it so nothing can get in there.

Grounding Block

Thank you for the information & pictures. So the Brown & Brown/yellow group wires go to the engine Manifold Socket Head Cap Screw & an earth strap goes from there to one end of the grounding block ? But nothing is connected to the other end of the Grounding Block ? Is that correct ?

I posted other pix & questions here last night that might appear later but because there were links it was refered to the Moderator.
Here's a pic of the firewall where the Vacuum Reserve should be. I've moved the Alarm System that was mounted there & I can't see that there's bolt holes or clamps that would previously held the Vacuum Reserve.
Do all, including automatic, 944s have this plastic Vacuum Reserve tank ? Do some models have it elsewhere ?
I still can't find the firewall nipples where the vacuum line goes through to the heater.

From memory: behind the engine block at the bottom right-hand corner of your picture. Look down low.

Sorry: not near my car at present so can't take pics.

Not sure where you are in Oz. I'm west of Sydney if I can help by phone or otherwise.

Good luck

David.

OK. I now believe that because the 1982 didn't have air conditioning it also didn't have the vacuum reserve NOR did it have the firewall nipples to aircon/heater flaps etc.
Not sure why mine has the nipple at the brake booster plug. I'll block it off.

Next question. What is this thing in the image with 2 electrical spade connectors at the bottom please ? There's a couple of spare broken wires nearby that maybe, once in the past, went to it. It obviously hasn't been connected to the wiring for some time now.

That IAV is for the A/C operation on an early car. That is the idle kickup when the A/C is engaged. The early car has a seperate IAV under the intake too that is DME controled.

Thank you Ernie & thanks for the grounding block information & tips. I'll keep that IAV price in mind in case I give up on this project and part the bits out on eBay. lol
Thanks Dawgz. It's useful to know the IAV function as well as it's name.
So my previous advice might have been wrong. There's factory air conditioning in this 82 automatic 944 but no vacuum reservoir.
Anybody have experience with these early models please ?
The vacuum valves #7 & #12 aren't in my circuit. Although the line to #12 doesn't exist anyhow. Were 82 auto models different or has the #7 one way valve maybe been lost ?

Should there be a cover plate over the flywheel on this 82 Automatic ?
What does the Capscrew at the bottom here normally hold in place ?
