is this clutch disk correct

ok so my son and i are replacing the clutch on this 83 944 - the sachs one is way too expensive (or so i thought ) so we order one from vertex - it arrives yesterday and while the diameter is the same, the center hub with the splines is much shorter (see picture) - has anyone used one of these disks and what was the outcome - it seems like it would be ok since the driveshaft would go all the way through it anyway, just not as beefy - but still i'm not convinced it's the right one - emailed vertex but no answer so far - sometimes a bargain is not a bargain - anyone know? - thanks

The Vertex disc, aka "Italian" is a great disc.

I wrote a report on it a couple of years ago.
If yours is the same as the one in my pictures it works great.

Since I put it in it is flawless and the "feel" is great.
Many others have used the disc as well.
Your picture shows the "increased thickness" of the material I mentioned.

Makes you wonder how many companies out there make the clutch disk for our cars that are priced as economical.

looks like a great trade off material removed from the spline connection but added clutch material.

Thanks for posting it

Never forget the reason behind the "dreaded rubber centered deal". Its all about time not milage. A 70k 25 year old garage queen will be in just as need for a full rubber refresh as a 250K hack DD. This includes the clutch disk. I've pulled clutches on the "limp home function" too many times now with rivets scoring the flywheel! That is a design failure as it failed to protect even more valuable parts.

EASY to forget that the rubber centred disc is there to protect the gearbox too...924 turbo's is a case in point - ( Talking Euro here)

I've not yet seen a high milage 944 rubber centred clutch fail with plenty of friction left - ie premature rubber failure (miles not time)

This is just my theory BTW...

The rubber center disc was a great cushioning device. The rubber disc is still in demand if an owner of an automatic wanted to do a "semi-modified" standard setup and could find an old rubber center disc:

I am not sure of your conclusion about the "ie-premature rubber failure (miles not time)

Both of my rubber discs had "some" friction material left. I was not down to the rivets on either side. Both had deterioated rubber centers.

I just pulled one where the rubber looks great, but one or rivets were just starting to scuff. Depends on how it's used, of course.

Of course we can never second guess the factory but the turbo had a harsh spring centred affair. No doubt things were strengthened to account for natural torque increase...kinds throws away the protective rubber theory.

Shocked at how the rivets (every other one) sit so proud on a new unit, makes confidence in re-using a used part leary....I tend to do this, but the odd budet looking customer looks at me as if I'm selling them a very short term gain. Any specs ref. rivet to surface... MY eyes I trust but I am getting older lol.

Very useful link regarding the Auto Guys...Used "doughnuts" at least here in the UK are findable in the £100 range. (unless you really need one lol.)
