Rack Refresh

Just received a manual steering rack from the salvage yard. Turns nicely, but I still think I'd like to clean out all the old grease and regrease it. Anyone over done this? Recommendations?

Thanks!

the biger problem is the little piston and his spring,it have years of dirt and if the piston don't push the rack it have more play(bad feeling)

i suppouse that clean the rack with fuel and then regreas the teeth, inside of piston and the end of it will be fine

I cleaned the rack entirely and put in new VW Steering grease The manual recommends using VW Steering grease on the actual rack itself (Number AOF-063-000-04.) I bought it from World-Impex (one of the few places that does have it.)

Genuine VW / Audi GREASE (AOF-063-000-04 / AOF06300004)

I took mine a part as far as i could with basic tools and cleaned everything up and used the same recomended valvoline grease recomended for c.v axles here and Honda Moly 60 Paste mixed at a 50/50 and straight and a little more Honda Moly 60 paste on the little piston that is the center of the rack as i would imagine it does not move much. The VW grease was too much hassle for me to order and seemed to be a high molly content anyways so i made my own. been working great for about 1 month now
