WHy no early 944's for sale?
I was just browsing the cars for sale section, and after going through the first three pages, I noticed that there were no 1983/1984 944's for sale.
So I was just wondering why? Not many around? People dont want to get rid of them? Not worth having? Just seems a little peculiar, since I own an 83 944, and I see a lot of them around here. |

I don't know why you'd want to buy an earlier version of this great little car when the ones that came after 85 1/2 had so many great improvements. Maybe there's something there that's just special to you.

A lot of people prefer early models for one reason or another. Usually it's because they're a little more simple.
Personally I like late models a lot more but I wouldn't mind having an '83 since they came with manuel everything. |

The early cars dont have those ugly side moldings. Better for the use of different wheels. Uh the only thing is the fuse box location, but it's worth it! Plus those yellow gauges are the ****.

i had and early and now late version and maybe the only difference is that the late version civilization is bigger.
The first have closer sterring wheel and the driving is more "oldschool" feeling. In global tecnicaly are identical.Stell arms are maybe softer bur with 15" original tires you can't feel any difference. The early cars are not so many because many are parts car, canibalized, crasched and devasted of many owners with no many ,time or love for proper care. Late cars are a little better owning, the number of product car are decreeased with years and only real porsche lovers have it in first hands. The early cars was a must in early 80' and everyone want to have it with or without love...

I don't know about the gauges, I think I'd rather have B&W ones instead of brown and yellow. :P

The '83 is the best for 2 reasons.
1) Manual steering. Search how many later 944s have power steering leaks plus road feel is much better. 2) Manual sunroof. Search how many later 944s have broken sunroof nylon gears. Speedy

Side moldings were an option. I don't have them on mine. It's got manual steering, sunroof and hatch - no PS leaks or issues with hatch or sunroof.

both my early cars have side moldings and i wish they didn't as the paint on them is rapidly sloughing off.
I do prefer early cars as well, unfortunately my '84 is the only one I've seen recently that isn't a toilet. i see them for sale locally now and then, they are cheaper to be sure, and as such are usually treated that way. I changed my '84 to manual steering - haven't looked back. also i'm at a distinct advantage because i have no sunroof to mess with I don't know what improvements came on the later cars that were so great... i will change my control arms to aluminum simply because i have a spare set lying around... otherwise nothing else that came in the late car seemed that great to me. split rear seats is about it. i like my lightweight, raw, nimble little '84 for driving around the streets much more than the 951S.by the way, if you want b&w gauges on your early 944 it's as easy as finding some matching 924S gauges (gotta use ones that have the same options - in my case i had to find one with a CASIS light AND mpg indicator). I also moved the tach to the middle like a 911 (try doing THAT with your late 944 gauges). it IS more important than your vehicle speed, after all. early cars FTW

Early cars rule!
I have and early '85 and can't see why anyone would want to switch to the manual steering, I think the power assist is perfect with just the right amount of road feel.. Also being an '85 its over 25 years old which means Classic car insurance ![]() Early dash is retro cool. Mine has original optioned Fuchs, can't have that on a latter car. This is just a weekend car for me, maybe if I drove it everyday I would have a different opinion. |

two reasons: my power steering had ***** the bed, and that PS fluid leaks will destroy... ANNIHILATE rubber bushings. I like my suspension the way it is, I'd rather not worry about pesky little fluid leaks destroying my nice rubber suspension bits.
that said, the power steering in the 944 series is absolutely fantastic! the feel is phenomenal and 'upgrading' to manual rack really gives a negligible benefit to feel unless you have worn tie rods that need to be replaced... but then again refreshing those would fix the issue just as easily!

I have to wonder if, because of various reasons (lower value, lighter/simpler in some regards) more of the early cars don't end up as 944 Cup and 944 Spec racers.

I was just GIVEN an 83, it needs a HG and a master cylinder....then it's time to begin the destruction to make it a 24 hours of Lemons car....that's all it's worth to me. I hate the gauges, it's under powered, and lacks the refinement of the 85.5 an later cars. But it sure is going to be fun to see if we can make it last through the race

I know the engine SHOULD last, but who knows the condition of the bearings, etc...not going to tear into it to check, just do the HG fire it up run it a bit and see what happens....then there are things like the automatic transmission that may or may not last, who knows, and for that matter, who cares.....it's just for the fun of it anyway. A bunch of high school buddies (that was 43 years ago), cuttin, wrenchin, and torchin, then hangin out at the track, barbequeing and having a good time, laughing at all the "interesting race cars"...who knows, we may just win the $500 in nickels. lol
