968 cabriolet broken top frame
I'm looking into buying a 968 cabriolet that has a broken top. Apparently the main bow is broken. I'm waiting to get the part numbers of the broken parts. Does anyone know what is involved with getting this fixed? Does the w
hole top need to be removed to get at the bows or can this be done with the top in place? The price for the car is really good but I want to make sure the top isn't any bigger project than I imagine. I know the parts are difficult to find but I was hoping to be able to get the work done myself. Any thoughts? |

Dealer cost on the Main Bow Frame is about $950. I priced one a few months ago at Sunset Porsche when I thought I needed one. Not the easiest job to replace, but not the worst. Some Gent on ebay is selling one that he has had welded and wants your old one back. There are a lot of Cabs out there that the electric top does not work. If the motors get out of alignment it twists the Main Bow and that is when they break. Mine has a new top but the motors were left inop. It is very easy to put up and take down the top manually. Any shop has to know what they are doing to align the motors correctly.
Cheers, Larry

I had the same thing happen for me. In a truly torrential rain, rushing to close the cab, the motor or mechanism on the RH side apparently stuck, while the LH motor was gladly spinning. Since I was in a hurry, I did not discover this until it was too late, and the LH main bow broke. I was able to get a competent welder to fix it - but it is an experience I do not want to repeat.
From looking at the parts list, it seems there should be some little rod 91162427300 that is supposed to keep the two motors in sync? Have not found how to access the motors yet: I believe they are under the lining below the rear window, but it was not obvious to me how to remove the lining piece. |
