knocking in the rear??

Now another problem, when i was driving i noticed every time i accelerated and decelerated there was a big clunk. So i put the car on stands and checked to see if my cv's were good and they looked fine. drive line seemed tight. sounded like it was coming from the transmission so replaced the gear box oil and checked for any metal and there was none. So i turned the car on and put it in first and taped on the breaks and clunk every time? the clutch is fine put it in first and slammed on the breaks it died. i have no idea what it could be? anyone have any ideas or tricks i can do to diagnose the problem? its a 84 944
thank you

definitely pull the wheels and examine the brakes, check for excessive play somewhere. has the clutch been changed from the original rubber centered one?

i just recently bought the car about 2 months ago and have only spent a week driving it. been in the mechanics with belts and ac and seal kit. so as far as i know about the clutch it is stock. i has 110k it has a little clicking noise but if you push the shifter down a little bit it goes away. so i was thinking that was my through out bearing. this knock though when accelerating and decelerating is loud.

Check the mounts on the trani, maybe the torque from excel decel is causing the bang.

Your rubber clutch is bad and its slamming off the pegs. When you're at speed and let go of the gas it immediately makes the noise right? And then when you get back on the gas it makes the noise too?

Rubber center clutch is bad if the above is what happens.

Yeah, you have to replace the whole clutch. Mine was doing the knocking thing when coming on and off the power and it was the clutch. I found the best way to test whether it's definitely the clutch is to get under the car and take the rubber inspection panel off the bell housing on the transaxle. Then reach in and try to turn the torque tube (this is with the car not running of course!).

If it turns more than a little bit the clutch is gone.

It's a big job. I paid a shop to do mine, but after a year working on these cars I think I'd be tempted to do it myself in future.

One thing to bear in mind is that it'll make the car MUCH better to drive. I thought mine was drivable when it had the bad clutch but when I got it fixed the car was transformed.

Good luck.

Mike

spare tire rocking back and forth in the trunk?

i had a clutch failure and never had any clunking or weird noises. that doesn't mean your clutch isn't toast though...

oh, and how do you replace part of a clutch???

You don't replace part of the clutch you do the whole thing.

As stated, better to replace everything at once than having to take things apart several times.
Replace hose, master and slave cyls., pressure plate, disc, flywheel at least turned, and balance the whole assy. if you can. Check release fork for wear, replace release bearing and check the clutch fork shaft for wear, replace the needle bearings that go on the end of that shaft.
There are plenty of write-ups on replacing the clutch.

While you are in there of course you will be replacing the throwout bearing, but also replace the pilot bearing in the flywheel. Absolutely check the throwout fork for cracks and wear, replace if necessary (The throwout fork has a reputation for breaking, cracking at the arms). Replace the throwout shaft bearings as necessary (Not to expensive parts to do while there, and good insurance).

I bought the Sachs clutch disc off Amazon and replaces absolutely nothing else. Some people will cry foul at this, it is your judgement and yours alone on what NEEDS to be replaced. I greased everything I could reach with fresh molybdenum grease. You can even grease the throwout bearing if you feel like sitting there and spinning it in through the crack where the halves meet.

Again this is a judgement and a budget call. Mine was budget influenced.
