Different Cam Belt Tensioner Rollers?

Just putting my spare engine back together. I ordered belts and rollers several weeks ago and just pulled them all out today.

I see the cam belt tension roller is different than the old one. From Clark's, the old part number is 944 105 631 04, and what I got was 944 105 631 06. You put the old number from Clark's into Pelican's system, it does say the old part is superseded by the new 06 part they sent me.

They are pretty different though - the old roller's width is 19mm; the new one is 26mm. It fits okay.

I just wanna make sure I have the proper part before I put it together. Can someone confirm this?

Thanks.

Old roller on left; new one at right.

I recently wondered this myself. I asked my local pro mechanic who ordered the part for me and he said it would work fine and that they use them all the time. I told him it just looked a little cheaper and weaker. I can tell you the difference. I believe the one you bought is made in the Czech republic. I don't recall the brand, but whether you order it from Porsche or Advance AutoParts it's the same company. Its lighter from what feels like more plastic. What I don't like is that it doesn't have the snap ring to keep the whole assembly from coming apart at speed like the old metal tensioners do. So I'm not sure I would run it without checking it pretty often. I think its just a problem of everything being outsourced to some cheap communist country.

Yeah. Well hopefully they're building them to spec and have some decent quality control.

I bought mine here on Pelican: Pelican Parts - Product Information: 944-105-631-06-M40

It does say the company is a Porsche original equipment supplier.

I did end up using mine. Even though it's deeper and wider, the installed dimensions are the same - that is, the belt rides where it should.

It looks and feels good. Hopefully it'll last.
