Suggested locations for the alarm system?

Hi!

I'm probably going to buy a Carbine 5500 Plus alarm system for my 1986 951. Being given that there aren't many possible locations where the main module could fit, do you have any suggestion? Is there enough space behind the glove box? What's about the location of the siren of the car alarm? Did anybody install one personally into its car? Do you have any tip?

Also, does anybody know Carbine alarm systems? What do you think about them?

Thanks alot guys, and sorry for my bad english!

Hi Yan,

seeing as you have to ask it doesnt appear that you know what your doing ! Which for fitting an alarm is bad !!!

If you do know what your doing then this is a silly question !

ok bearing that in mind here's a few pointers

1) Type of alarm system: never heard of it. Go for a known make, Clifford seems to be best, have had 2 of them

2) Most "proper" alarm's sold will only be fitted by a distruibutor, all the cheapies can be fitted in seconds and usally prone to false alarm or non-alarms, seeing as your fitting to a Porsche I'd go for a proper dist. fitting. Plus it'll come with a certifcate. usefull for your insurance company and a g'tee.

3) However if your determined to fit yourself, in my s2 cab, the siren unit is under the bonnet, the controll unit under the drivers side of the dash, and sensors all over the place.

hope this helps

Adrian

I'd have to agree with Adrian...

Acutually, the best place for an aftermarket alarm system is in the trash bin. The poor installations we see of these things cause more problems than anything else!! If your 951 has the stock Porsche alarm and it works, leave it. Otherwise pay a professional alarm installer to correctly fit a proper alarm.

YAN

I just had a compustart system alarm/auto start installed in my wifes mustang.

Neat gizmo.

Shock sensors, doors, perimeter...etc.......but whats neat it is a 2 way fm transmitter.

If someone goes near the car... it sends a signal to the transmitter...etc.......

You can start the car upto 1.5 miles away (nice when its a cold winter day)...it has a visual led of what state the car is in...(alarm on, door open, perimeter triggered etc....)

but I have an alpine in my 944 and it works just fine........and yes I installed it myself..........but like anything ....read on how to do it right........... you have to know about relays, diodes .......and if you are not sure what those are or how they work ...leave it for the pro's

Thanks for the replies. In fact, I was just wondering of where I should put the modules, I think that I have enough skills to install the electrical stuff. I'm presently at the university in electronics engineering. Being given that my door switches don't work anymore, I'll take advantage of the situation to fix all these small electrical problems and maybe install two aftermarket doorlocks. The Carbine 5500 Plus system worths about 130$ uninstalled + 120$ for the 4 watt pager & receiver. I think that it'll do the job. But, I agree with you guys, I'll think twice before installing it by myself, after all professionnals will make it 100% reliable.

See ya!
And again, I know that my english $uck*

I would have to agree with Britwrench...THE TRASH CAN!!

More trouble than they are worth. Professional car thiefs are not worried about 944's, and radio thiefs.....well, let 'em have it.

Hey Yan,

Good to know you've got the electrical knowledge, but it more to do with "actual" alarm instal experience. I've done my electronics stuff at college and I still wouldnt install an alarm.

Done that before and got the t-shirt for false alarms !

As for theiefs, yes pppl are more likly to go for a more nickabkle "NEWER" car, lexus, bm,new porsche etc.

your car propable be targetted by snatch and grab merchants or joyriders

heop this helps
