Ok, i'm back on track! After being discouraged by gouged cylinders I got a really nice long block from joepfs. Thanks joepfs!! Yet another example of a porsche owner with class.
Now I'm starting the rebuild.

So onto my questions.
1) I'm trying to take off the drive pulley but because its on the engine stand the motor keeps turning. Any idea on how to stop the engine from turning so I can loosen the nut?

2) The pistons on my new motor are stamped with a number 1. I was told this is good to have. Is th there something to this?

3) I am going crazy? I've been bit bad by the porsche bug. I think about my porsche all the time. If I'm on the computer I'm on pelican looking for parts or looking at forums. I pop onto the internet at work in between projects to look at parts. I can't wait to work on it. Is this normal?

That is tightened to 155 ft/lb., so it's going to be a big effort to loosen it. I usually do it by holding a Flywheel bolt with a socket and long breaker (Often a two person job). Or if you have one an impact air wrench will work very well also.

That #1 on the pistons is to signify tolerance group 1. That's good because in case of bad break or extreme wear it's still possible to re-build to tolerance group 2 or 3.

The first time I drove a 944?

Well .......... only just last summer even though I'd been in love with the 944 since 1986 when my english teacher bought a brand new guards red one.

The funny thing is, I haven't even driven my 944 once! It was being sold as a parts car but the only thing bad was the motor. I wasn't looking for a project car at all but I wasn't finding anything I liked that was running at a decent price and this was a great deal. Too good to pass up IMO.

So now I can't wait to get the motor rebuilt and back in the car and take it for a spin! It probably won't happen until next spring since I'm at the begining of the rebuild stage.

Of course, my brother asked if it was the mid life crisis car.

A pity the term mid-life crisis has come to cover anything new you pick up as a source of enjoyment in your middle years. Almost as if they should be dedicated to boredom!

I always thought the sign of a mid-life crisis was a bloke leaving his long-suffering wife of twenty years for a 25 year-old woman. Not the purchase of a 25 year-old car!

But hey, yes, in my family we all refer to the 944 as Dad's mid-life crisis car. Even me.

They have faults and you fix them,then when you drive them you forget all that,but if you get a bad one or someone like the PO has screwed up on servicing it will bite you bad,trust me.
While I remember I made a flywheel lock from an old aircooled VW starter pinion gear,worked great for getting the crank pulley nut undone.:):):)

Is the flywheel still on the crank(in the stand)? If so, just install a clutch bolt in one of it's holes, and use a medium length wrench jammed between that bolt and one of the arms on the engine stand.
If not, install two of the flywheel bolts in the crank and bind a breaker bar between those two bolts and allow it to "counter" against said engine stand.
Good luck, and keep us updated. Inspect everything very well in the area of the crank' like rod-bearing journals, rods, and crankshaft thrust.
