Light weight mods, anyone done it ?

Took my car out for an extended trash on the road, really enjoyed myself the 2.7 just pulls like a horse, all issues behind me now hopefully, thanks to all.
O.K. an idea came to mind about building up a lightweight version,silly idea's in this order ;
Rear set delete,no room the kids have grown up
Manual window conversion ,hate electric windows anyway
Remove hatch lock motor (next to useless)
Lightweight (alloy)or no spare tyre
Fixed headlight conversion (big weight saving here)
Light weight high output altenator (have one)
Glassfibre bonnet maybe.
Decat (done that)

I don't want race car spec like no carpets or sound deadning, want to just prune some pounds off (not me the car )

Engine mods coming up are Wilks 2.7 euro chip, custom cold air box and thats about all you can do with the motor, looked @ headers but I have the steel pipe system already which looks pretty good for flow.
Please feel free to add your idea's and please post a pick of rear seat delete setup if you have one,saw one on here but can't find it,cheers

Thats a common question that comes up a lot.

this is the most sensible recent discussion i've seen on the topic
944 RS concept - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Ideola has a thread on www.924board.org, pelican and rennlist for very good reading:
What makes a club sport a club sport? - Rennlist Discussion Forums

a kiwi called bad monkey has recently installed the carpet/rear seat delete kit to get by appbiz
Applied Business Concepts
just trying to find the thread made by the guy who helped Appbiz develop it for the 944...

one grey area for us in NZ and one I haven't checked for several years, is if you get fixed back buckets seats (non-reclinable) and if you remove the rear seatbelts you'll need a cert. I don't know if that info is still current.

I had a streetable fibreglass bonnet on my cgt replica and it was AMAZING! it had all the bracing like the factory steel item, had the insulation on the underside and when you popped it and unlatched it, it would shoot the bonnet straight up in the air! locally, try Paul at Autobahn in Levin and Europacific in Te Awamutu for one. I had fibreglass front and rear guards too which were also light.

Now thats extreme, nice piece of work, had a browse @ the links thanks, forgot to mention I will move on the design 90's on the car @ present and have 16" fuches in the shed to go back on after a makeover, The D90's are heavy and the offsets are less than ideal for an early 944.
Thanks I will investigate the links fully but need to check Lotto then I may go mad with the card, will get back to you re:reply, thanks

no worries. was trying to find my old project thread from another forum for my cgt replica but its gone. I had corner weighted my 932 with all the fibreglass and with the 930 wheels that are on my 944 now. it was just over 2450lbs with 1/4 of a tank minus driver. it was very even left to right and front to rear. i'll keep digging.

Thanks mAd,mine being a 85 sits between those 2 cars weight wise, I believe the early ROW cars are lighter to start with due to the smaller bumpers.
Its hard to get exact weights as info seems vary a bit.

There is a guy on rennslist that has no body panels... I'm guessing the car is extremely light.

Hi porschetub,
i edited my weights, i was converting from pounds and stuffed up one of the numbers and then pelican went down for maintenance so i couldnt save changes!

here ideolas clubsport thread from 924board
http://www.924board.org/viewtopic.php?t=31912&highlight=clubsport

heres pics of the appbiz carpet. you might need to join rennlist to see them
RS Carpet Kit w/pics - Rennlist Discussion Forums

i did have a set of manual window sliders from a friends '77 924 I was going to put into my '80 932 but my doors were going to need modification to fit so I didn't bother and sold them on.

heres something to aspire to, the interior from a 924 carrera GTS

I do like the idea of fixed lights but I don't think i would have done it to my 932 or my current 944, it changes the look so much. I had considered deleting that headlight bar assy though. the 924/924S/944 and the 932 had their headlight motors on opposite sides. I was thinking of working out a way to use both so i could mount a 951 intercooler and piping while keeping popup headlights. There are probably more modern, lighter motors out there that could do the job too (MX5?).

Cheers Mad,had a look @ the rear seat delete today, that will be easy enough, wondering about the alloy spares are they any lighter ?
Checked out the foglight delete spoiler on my 89 parts car its in mint condition that will come off and get a coat of black.
Been wrestling with my headlight problem so I haven't gone much further.

My lightweight list is getting smaller;

Folding headlight delete ?,the fixed light conversion offer poor lighting quality due the the lights being set back and shining through a angled cover.
Replacing spare with alloy type? these are meant to still be rather heavy @22lbs,I will weigh my steel one or go without.
Manual windows, seems theres 13lbs to save, will need to find some?
The rear seat?someone stated 35lbs?would that be right? anyway its going and I have a cool idea for a replacement.

Your comments?

Had some more idea's today as I was doing my interior make-over,
Ditch the electric aerial and fit a roof mounted "bee sting " they are on the 968 I think ,nice euro look and there is a section of the roof to mount it .
Fit later window wash bottle, only a small weight saving but something.
Replace the insulation under the rear carpet something lighter, sound matt or similar,it has to be lighter.
Did you ever fit a Wilks chip in your car I remember an old thread of yours.

no i have a 944MAX chip. You can get them from lindsey racing. both MAXhpkits and Wilks are well-respected if you go with either you'll be doing well.
the '88 and up 944's had the updated window wash bottle. There's still 2 different sizes, one for headlight washers and one without. I've shopped around for these before. paragon is cheapest at USD$50.93 + freight, pelican is 55.00
Porsche 924S, 944, 944S, 944S2 and 944 Turbo Windshield Washer Reservoir
Pelican Parts - Product Information: OEM-94462806000

you could ask Paul at Autobahn in Levin if he has a spare one too.

you can remove the rear wiper and plug the hole to save a few kgs?

Are you happy with the chip?.
As you know I did a motor change so I have the 89 roller for parts so washer bottle no problem ,these are way smaller than the one in the car @ present.
Dusty country roads where I live dictate keeping tne rear wiper kinda worked out how often I needed so it will stay.
Found ''bee sting" aerial " new in Auckland for 45 + gst so that will go in while I have the roof trim panels off.
