Anyone ever try this to their AFM?

Air Flow Meter (AFM) - from "The 944 Motronic DME" by FR Wilk* ©2001 www.the944.com

Was there any improvement after you tried this?

Did this to my 83. Made throttle response smoother and was a fun evening of fixing. The trick is getting the AFM open without hurting anything. Be gentle and careful.

Hehe - a fun evening of fixing....that's exactly what I was looking to do tonight in the garage

What did you end up doing to get through the sealed cover? Or more importantly, what did you use to seal it back up?

Sliced around circumference with a sharp blade and gently pried it open with a screwdriver. Resealed afterward with black silicone, but I put the plastic top back on and THEN sealed the outside edge, just on the off-chance the electronics didn't like the silicone. I was lucky 'cause I had a spare to destroy getting it right. And yes, I DID destroy my spare...

Wow that cameraman must have been tiny .

This is a standard fix I've done on vw and bmw afms,but its not for the ham-fisted,before you go cutting in to the cover clean the body out with afm spray cleaner then check the action of the air gate,if thats worn you need to look @ a exchange replacement.
Its not worth proceeding on the wiperboard fix if the rest no good.
Wee tip cutting off the lid sealer,cut upwards to free the join,carefully praise the cover all the way around not just by one cover,have't broken one with this method.
I friends been working on vws for years and his thrown heaps of faulty? afms away ,wasn't happy when I recently told him of the fixes possible

Well, what started this whole idea was when I was tinkering around earlier this week. I was cleaning engine bay contacts, plugs, and took the AFM off to inspect the door movement & clean.

Put everything back together and fired the car up. It barely started and was running horrible. Looked back under the hood and forget to plug the AFM connector back in

So anyways, plugged that back in and she started right back up. But wait....the car now had a bad miss at idle, bucking and serious backfire under heavy load. What da??? Disconnected and reconnected the battery, changed out spark plugs, cap, rotor and no change. Fuel filter is on its way. Don't know what I must have disturbed when I first started cleaning everything(?)

On a late 85.5 AFM the plastic cover pops off relatively easily. I cleaned the contacts with an eraser, as described elsewhere on this forum or Clarks, and there was noticeable improvement. I reattached the cover with black RTV silicon 3-4 years ago and no problem to date.

I wonder if the extra wire provides the same boost as the MAF mod discussed extensively some months ago?
