Help with taking apart a caliper
 

Hi all,

Right now I am taking apart some calipers I picked up at a Pick-n-pull lot. They're from a Porwche 944 (1984). Right now I have the pads out and the only thing holding the two halves together is the spring clip (part #6 on the exploding diagram). When I try and pull the ends out with a pair of needle nose pliers they don't seem to want to ome out. Is there any special way to do that?

Also, any good suggestions on where to buy replacement pistons IF I end up needing them?

I recently rebilt the rear calipers on my 944S. The spring clip doesn't hold the halves together- They are a tight fit, but they can simply be pried/banged/slid apart. Mine were a bit difficult, as they hadn't been apart on who knows how many years, but after some frustration, a naughty word or two and a bit of redneck ingenuity, I got them apart.

DO put them back together correctly the first time, or you get to do it again. Don't ask....

If you take one apart at a time, the other one is still complete to help remember how the pieces go back together.

If you disassemble all four at once, write down casting numbers on the caliper halves and the pots.

Caliper rebuilt is easy. I bought everything I needed on Pelican: Pads, clips, rebuild kit, etc.

Go invest in a Motive Bleeder and it will make putting brake fluid in easy.

Thanks all!! Definitely doing them one at a time as this is my maiden voyage working on brakes. Will be a little more forceful when I go back to them. Guess I was just worried about busting something.
