Ooops, fuel leak

Today I noticed a damp spot underneath my '87 NA 944 at the right rear. A finder swipe to the area confirmed it is fuel.

I can see that it seems to be coming from an area above the spare tire well.

I checked the area where the fuel sender is and it is dry, none of the lines appear to have a problem.

Any ideas where to start? I have zero experience with fuel lines.

Thanks,

GHEN

Could be a leak from the fuel tank or the expansion chamber that runs across the top of the tank. Since your fuel tank is likely to be made from plastic I doubt it is the tank itself and more likely the fuel tank expansion chamber. Either way you will probably need to pull the tank from the car. Follow my procedure here

It's probably the short fuel hose between the filter and the hard line. They are known to become brittle.

I was just about to start a thread about the fuel leak on my 87 951.

It does leak when I fill up. It spits out of the filler neck then I notice fuel under the car.

I am imagining that it is a hose coming from the expansion tank that has a crack in it, or it could be the check valve malfunctioning, or both.

I'm dreading having to pull the carpet and trim panel out to get to the filler neck.

I did jack the pass. side up to see if there was anything obvious. Did not see anything.

I will look at a 944 thats here tomorrow, but I think this short hose from the filter can easily be replaced.
Does anyone have a photo of this area?

The factory hoses in this area just seem to fall to bits yet the lines to the motor can be fine, mores exposed to road crap and what not.
My early car they are good and my later car completely had it

Could it possibly be the accumulator?

Turns out it was the hose from the tank to the pump...little J-shaped hose about five inches long.

It crumbled when I touched it & I wound up covered with fuel which sucked, but at least I figured it out. Thanks for all the help.
