924S Oil in coolant AFTER head gasket and oil cooler seal change
I just had the head gasket and oil cooler seals replaced on my 1987 924S, and 600 miles later I find oil in the coolant reservoir, as well as the green gunk on the bead in the middle of the dipstick. It looks just like it did when the head gasket blew, except this time it hasn't overheated and it's been driving fine with no apparent problems.
The first time, I'd just had the timing belt and water pump done, and a radiator hose came off during a long drive and it overheated pretty bad. Still, the oil and coolant didn't start mixing until I'd driven another 500 miles AFTER that. What should I be watching for when we open it up again?

did you have oil cooler pressure tested when the job was done? 98% are ok but sometimes there is that one oil cooler that is bad. or oil is still in the system i use dawn dishwashing detergent to flush out the system sometimes twice. i have a good used cooler if you need one. regards tom

I don't think they tested the oil cooler, because when I called them back that's the thing he mentioned he would check.
Oil still in the system is what I was thinking. They flushed it out twice with dishwashing detergent, though. Would that be enough or could there still have been some oil stuck in there? And yes, I'm taking it to a shop. Don't have the space or the tools to work on it myself.

The usual reason is that the shop did not pre lube the 2 big green "O" rings on the oil cooler and the seals "rolled" causing the leak.

Could the head be warped due to the really bad overheat?
Wait, let me rephrase the question: With the assumption that it did warp, did you get it shaved before you reinstalled it? Otherwise, it must be the cooler or it's O-ring seals, if that was also removed and re-installed when you did the HG, as there are numerous things that CAN go wrong with that particular job, from what I understand. |

They said they machined the head. I'll give them this info, thanks.
