Get a roll of trace paper and carefully make a template of your existing stone guards (or if you happen to have a set of new factory ones in the packaging you can use those). Then get a cutting mat and an exacto knife and cut 'em to shape. Easy, simple. Can be done in an hour at home. Obviously thicker material is better. Sign shop stuff tends to be a little thin (4-6 mil) so you may want to double them up (I did) to get better protection. I'm sure if you look around you can find thicker stock as well (10+ mil) online or at a supply shop. Might cost a little more. Look around, there are a lot of options out there. |
the mill thickness of the overlays should be 16 mills thick . there should also be 6 overlays in the set !
any thing under a 10 mill thickness will not protect the finish in any way shape or form . even con-tact paper is thicker than 2 mills at a 3 mill thickness . in my shop we can remove the old overlays in about a half an hours time . there is a very ez way to do it that will not harm the finish in any way . like i stated before you can get the right 16 mill vinyl online for about 50 dollars . |
That sounds about right - the stock guards are pretty thick stuff. Even my "doubled up" guards were thinner than stock but held up pretty well and I didn't get anything that was able to punch through it. Obviously thicker is going to be better (but a bit more expensive, a bit tougher to cut/form, etc.)...

I guess I'm the guy from Rennlist with the stone guards. If I can help anyone let me know. You can either use the link Scott left, PM me or email me at mpmastro@yahoo.com. I made a few different styles of the guards in clear, matte or gloss black. Made some other goodies too like front license plates. I guess I'll make a separate post over here.

Scott-- every time you post pics of your 951 it just blows me away.
Thanks! |
I have decided to go naked and leave the stone guards off. Mine were not damaged by road debris but rather from splits and cracks but I like the way it looks with out. True from a distance they are almost invisible but up close I think they make the car look like a redneck off roader:rolleyes:

Like these two JR.....there are three cars in photo #1 which you can see the stone guard...http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1322364393.jpg

I have to say, your car outclasses the boxter next door x1000
Although I have to admit, a Cayman gets me droolin' |
I agree with Ga 951 the 944 is much nicer than the boxter
|
Agreed, 944 is much nicer than the boxster, but the cayman is sexy.(Modern 944?)
|
The Boxster handles like a dream and is a cabrio to boot. I love em personally but need a 2+2 or 4-seater so the option is a 968 or 911 for a drop top...
The Boxsters have depreciated enough where they're viable for track cars - much like 944s were at about 10-15 years of age. |
