stone guard or not
 

I had to remove the stone guard both sides as there was damage. The question I have do you think I should leave it off or put on new?? I do not want it for it's intended purpose, but it will it matter for looks??

I need to remove mine. They are cracked and dirty and look bad. I tried to take them off one time, what a pain. I need to try with heat next time, maybe that will work. If I ever get mine off, they are not going back on. Looks better with them off.

it may look good with out them but the chips that you will get don't look to good too . replace them .

If the rock pits in the plastic give you any clue as to the abuse these areas get you will replace them. There is a reason these cars were given them at the factory...

+1 put 'em back on. I think they look cool. Especially when the are black. Functionality...yeah. But when I'm playing sports, at my age, it is how I look. NOT how I play.

Black looks good (I used to have them on my 951 that way). They look even better on a car with graphics (race/track). I'm on the fence right now W.R.T. my '89. I like the clean look but they are functional. I have a supply of clear vinyl that I can cut to the proper shape (templates easy to make) and install so they'll be pretty much invisible.

Anything looks better than old/ratty-looking/weathered stoneguards. Replace with clear or black - your choice. I wouldn't leave them off - Porsche put 'em there for a reason.

New ones are not that distinguishable from a distance, and a giant rock chip will REALLY stand out.

Definitely put new ones on!

For those that say it looks better without, maybe yours are old and faded and no long quite clear, see above picture of how ones that are only two years old look. :)

Being that paint goes over them, new ones SHOULD look pretty decent.

Why would you paint OVER them? That's inviting trouble.

I hope I'm misunderstanding you, but the correct "sandwich" (from outside to inside) is:

Stone guard (vinyl)
Adhesive
Paint
Primer
Metal

Yeah, the stone guards are the last layer, they provide a "soft" cover to keep the paint underneath from getting chipped. Unless you go with black ones, but even those still have the same purpose.

I like the black ones on the 911's, don't often see them on 944's.

What kind of film do you use?

I don't see them as much stone protection. I left them off my car after the repaint. All the chips on my car are lower than the guards would have been.

Painting over them would be one of the dumbest things you could do....

the real name for them is OVERLAYS . that in it's self tells you what they are ! painting them is point less . if your getting chips below the overlays thats ok . the overlays start at the chip guard line on the rockers . if you get some chips there they should not be down to the bare metal because of the chip-guard sprayed on the rockers . in my shop we offer our porsche customer our own overlays for all the porsche cars made . we have templates to cut them our selfs . we also off one to our customer that we made just a little bigger the the stock size offered . if you cut them out your self they will only cost about 40 dollars in materials . you can buy a roll of 3M film dirt cheap in the same mill thickness it's also offered in just about any color you want . we have a vynal plotter that cuts them out but you can use a X-acto knife .
if your car was just refinished you will want to wait about 48 hours of longer before you try to install the overlays back onto the car . if you don't the silvents that are still coming from the finish will delam the overlays . you will start to see air bubbles at first in the over lays . it will also eat into the new finish you just sprayed on the car . if you had your car sprayed in enamel you should wait at the least about a week before you apply the over lays . how you can see if the finish is setup enough . take your finger nail and push it into the finish . if you leave a finger nail make do not try to apply the overlays yet . wait until you leave no make from your finger nail .

There is a guy over on rennlist selling a complete set for $30 shipped....he is offering them in clear, matt black, glossy black....or any color you'd want.

Also, quite a few guys have already bought them and are pleased with the product, also your $$$'s don't go to Stuggart or someone on eBay....they go to a really good guy who is restoring a 944 in the good old USA.

Here is a photo of mine with the matt black ones.......also with the black you can overlay the old ones...and skip the hours spent removing them.
