Power Steering Pump Rebuilt Wrong?

So just rebuilt my power steering pump, but upon installation and after bleeding, the steering is much harder to turn than before. Here's what I did:

- Rebuilt pump
- Removed reservoir, flushed with soap and hot water, rinsed thoroughly, allowed to dry completely
- New tie rod ends, reinstalled same number of turns as previous.
- New sway bar mount (yup, previous one got soaked by the PS leak).
- Refilled reservoir, turned steering back and forth 20 times with wheels up, started the car, turned steering back and forth, added new fluid, put wheels down, same drill.

I didn't have new copper washers for the two bolts connecting to the PS pump, so I reused the old ones.

Wondering what my line of inquiry should be? I figure I'll take the pump off and take a look? When I rebuilt it, the wheel would spin easily, but would not 'coast' (i.e. spin with momentum after I let go).

Steering Wheel or pulley turned easily?
I'm not sure of eatlier models, but my 968's specify ATF. Think the 951 does also.
You may still have air in the system.

Aren't you supposed to turn the wheel to full left(?) lock and let the system bleed itself?

I did fill with ATF.

I hadn't heard of turning to the left - fwayfarer are you implying to turn it to the left with the car off, and just leave it for a couple hours?

Any other thoughts if I still have air in the system?

Does your ATF fluid in the power steering reservoir look pink and frothy, or is it a clear red?

Check out this thread

I have been using power steering fluid in mine. Should I change it out with ATF?

PS fluid will eat your seals, flush the system out and refil with ATF.

Why pay for one from Auto Zone when the Kit for the Power Steering Pump is only $20.00. It is a SIMPLE DIY job, but you still need to buy a new reservoir as the old screen can not be cleaned properly. Only ATF is to be used in our cars system.

Figured out the issue - I had improperly reassembled the pump. Once the halves are separated, there is a 'head' piece on the one half, which spins relative to the rest of the pump. I hadn't located this 'head' into the two locating bosses, but had instead set it up about 45deg out.

Also had the issue described above with bubbles, due to banjo bolts not tightened enough (with new crush washers on the way).

Thanks for the help everyone.
