right guy's,
I think this is a "normal" noise, or so I'm told, but would appreciate if you could check on your s2's noise seems to be coming from rear of car, near gearbox (suspect torque tube) now, when engine is idling (neutral) and I engage clutch noise goes, when engine idles (neutral) clutch not engaged then rev engine noise goes. when driving no niticable noise or problems with drive/shifting etc. the noise especially when parked sounds like a bag of bolts going round and round. If I hazzord a guess I'd say, its got louder, but over quite a long period of time. last thing that happened was clutch was changed around a year ago along with the pionion bearing. ideas ? os not from cold, only after car has been driven

Without any more information, it might be your throwout bearing or the rubber thingy in the clutch. Karl.

Yes my S2 does this too.
The noise is supposidly the 5th gear idler shaft in the gearbox rattling, as porsche made the bearings a slightly loose fit. You can only hear it in neutral with the clutch up as that is the only time the shaft is spinning with no load on it. My car has only 30K on the gearbox and does it noticably. The concensus seams to be that is may or may not eventually fail - my approach is to ignore it and hope it goes away. Mark

PS Clutch failure is clonking when driving and releasing/pressing the accelerator.

why does this only happen and certainly sound a lot noiser after the car has warmed up/and or driven long and hard from cold no problem

I think because the gearbox warms up, so maybe the endfloat increases, also the oil gets thinner when hot.
Since I put Redline synthetic in, the noise is more noticable when cold - redline is thinner than normal oil when cold.

I have similar noise with my tranny on my S2. It is relatively quite when cold and noisy after about 20miles of drive when the car is idling. I also noticed the drive train is less smooth at low rpm under load when hot with the drivetrain making more noise then usual when this happens. Keeping the revs slightly up, i.e changing down to 2nd instead of leaving 3rd while taking a slow corner improves matters. I personally believe 50% the torque tube bearings or 50% one of the bearings in the tranny input shaft will need attention to sort this problem out. Anybody else have an opinion here.

Same noise on my s2. Going to put fresh fluid in there and see the result. Cold=fine, hot and it rattles with the clutch up.
