Heater problem
The heater will not shut off, it is constantly blowing hot air when the engine warms up. I have the blower off, and the side vents closed and it still burns me out even in the winter. I have to do something before the summer comes. I do not have working AC and I knew that when I bought the car, if I can't enjoy the car with the top down I just don't drive it. But with heat issue is driving me crazy. How do I get the vent to outside air to actually work?
Ideas?

You can tie the heater valve shut to stop the coolant flow through the dash as a quick fix. At least you can enjoy the car while you diagnose the problem. I had the same problem years ago, but ended up just leaving the heater core bypassed since I only use the car during the summer.

Since I'm total new to 944's can you describe a little better where to tie it off? maybe a picture?

Just replace them
When you have the temp control knob on cool, the heater valve will lift, closing the line. It is in the open position otherwise as a default setting. If this does not work, either the valve is bad, 18 is cheap, check you vacuum lines as well.

I had the same, all heat situation.
I just purchased the Bracket 94457231400 @$1.19 and the clip 94457221700 @$.86. For a total invoice with tax of $2.22 . Installed per instructions (thanks Clark's Garage) and it works awesome. All heat to no heat and everything in between. When I picked up the parts, the counter guy said he didn't think anything from Porsche would be that cheap. I agreed and paid him with the ashtray change of the car. I finally won one......now for the A/C system..... |

Race2fast - Are you speaking of the plastic/nylon "U" shaped clip that holds the heat selection rod just under the dash, and to the right of the steering column there ?? That broken clip is often the cause of to much heat when not wanted...It closes off the heat and is easy to replace.

Yes - if that little nylon/plastic clip that holds the rod breaks then the rod slips and reverts to heat so one does not freeze in the winter - normal function.
Just with my experience it's almost always the plastic part that breaks first, then sometimes the metal part gets lost.

race2fast - did you have any difficulties replacing the clips? Clark's just shows the diagram but doesn't really have any kind of a tutorial. Maybe it's just as easy as it looks?
I visually checked my plastic clips, and they looked ok, but before I drop $100 on a used heater control unit I think I'm going to replace the clips just to be sure.. |

Where did you order these parts from? or do local parts dealers have these. I'm going to pull the cover today and see what I can see. Like black_falcon I think I'll replace them reguardless.

Another part that I'm familiar with that often breaks and is a cause of to much heat is:
This is the small plastic clip that helps control the heat out put - when this part fails the heater reverts to full heat.

Thanks guys, I pulled the cover off and indeed the white plastic piece closer to the front of the heater box is the one broken. They look to be the same, are they?
I'm going to order a set and hopefully that will do it!

Connect the rod part first then clip it into the bracket, super easy.

In the picture see the little duck billed clips that are holding the rods - one at 9:00 and the other at 12:30 - Those are the parts that break most often.

The one at 12:30 is half broken, the top side has broken off.
