Atlanta Former Garage Queen

Always wanted to drive a Porsche for an everyday car and at 62 decided this is it.

Bought an 86 944 NA today in Atlanta from a Craigslist ad. Seller bought it 3 yrs ago from original owner who garage kept. Stored in carport since. Carfax shows annual mileage from smog inspections. Car shows 129,209 with odo broken a yr ago. He drove as weekend car and tried to maintain condition. $7,000 spent in the last 3 yrs.

Summary of major work done:

2002--109,724 clutch, front seals, A/C drier and fan relay
2003--118,737 F/R rotors and pads, R/B front calipers
2004--119,639 Radiator
2005--121,426 Turbo engine mounts
2006--122,687 Brake Master cylinder
2009--123,957 plugs, wires, cap, rotor, fuel & air filter
2010--126,000 belts, new water pump, front seals, clutch slave & master cyls
2011--127,209 Front struts, f brake hoses

recent Bridgestone Potenze's but no receipt.

$4,500.

Plan on replacing belts to be safe when Arnwork tools arrive. Drove 80--90 all the way home.

Tool kit, spare tire pump, unused like-new spare. Front/rear strut shocks. Two sets keys, Alpine stereo with Ipod hookup and new speakers installed.

Too dark tonight for photos, but here are photos from 3 yrs ago. Some scratches from 2nd owner and photos don't show
driver seat tear. AC blows cold but needs recharged.

Almost forgot--No Dash Cracks.

I wouldn't necessarily call that a garage queen. Same paint color as my NA. Seat has standard wear/tear on it.

That torn bolster is repairable believe it or not. The basic procedure involves inserting a piece of leather inside the tear and gluing with contact cement, re-dying, filling, etc. There is a website with leather repair instructions.

Title said it was a former garage queen, but post a photo of your dash and we can compare them.

Been looking for a 944 for almost a year and this is best one I could find. $15,000 in repair receipts for last 10 yrs adds to potential road worthiness.

Pricing having seat bolster replaced Sat.

A year of looking at rough cars.
Driving to Atlanta and blowing $4,500 on a toy.
Driving to work 1st --Priceless.

Get rid of that Georgia Tech plate and you've got one nice ride!

You don't by chance live in East Nashville do you? There are not a lot of 356 owners around here, and I saw a real beauty of a notchback pass me at the corner of Porter and Eastland yesterday. Would be a crazy coincidence if it was you.

Seller kept the plate, for some reason. UT plate going back on as proper replacement.

I live in Knoxville. Probably a fellow Tennessee Tub member. Mine is disassembled for paint. There is a very active group in Nashville. May be more 356's than you realize. Look on the registry site for Tenn Tubs events. I think the Tubs have a website.

Engine bay will need some TLC first start by washing with (mild soap & water) all rubber hoses & plastic parts including J boot & air boxe & treat them with (Meguiare's Vinyl & Rubber cleaner/conditioner #40) same can be use on all your interior/exterior trims.I will seriously take a close look at those fuel lines if they have never been change & are the OEM I will replace them. What is that contraption underneath the the fuel rail? If your wallet permit your motor could also benefit from a new expension tank, don't forget to grease all operating parts on your healigths/hood -doors-hatchback ect ect something most peoples forget to do as part of maintenance, battery should also be remove & battery trays clean.Same for the sunroof,in the rear luggage compartement (driver side) there is mechanism/motor & relays for your roof, remove the pannel, clean the relays & gears.Lol this is just a starter got a bunch of work line up for you if you want to bring her back to garage queen standard.Following pics are for rear sunroof mechanism & relays.

I'm planning on a windshield fold out sun screen thing and a new white beach towel for added protection.

I don't know why you're thinking of changing the belts. They're good for around 30 K miles and/or 4 to 5 years with a new water pump every other belt change. These belts were changed I would say 5 to 6 k miles ago and 2 years. That's not an issue unless you're just super afraid he put an extra 20k miles on it in a year. Your car though and it's not going to hurt anything. Might check the rollers when you do it. Great looking car. Good on ya.

Oh, yeah, by the way that odometer is usually damaged by people trying to reset it with the button on the dash while the car is at speed. Bad idea. Best to reset it before moving the car. The little gear in there ages with heat and time and simply crumbles when stressed like described above. I tried to repair mine but it's too easy to damage the speedo shaft and needles. There's a couple of shops on the west coast that do a great job of fixing it. They're listed in Panorama magazine (PCA rag).

Some people try to turn back their "odometers." Not me. I want people to know 'why' I look this way. I've traveled a long way and some of the roads weren't paved.

Fixed the odometer this week. The $25 gear crumbled when I removed it. Fairly easy job, but I suggest numbering the plugs as you remove them. Mine were, but I missed it (written on the back) and got to takeout the gauge luster twice to fix. If you switch the right two plugs, the speedo and tach are dead.

Replaced bulbs with 1.4 watt bulbs fom another thread. The nite view is much better without killing night vision. Tire wear looks like low miles for last yr PO drove the car but will probably change the belts in 10k miles to be safe.
