clicking noises when down shifting and shifting
Hey guys the last couple of days my cars been acting weird, when I downshift I hear a clicking noise and the faster I go the faster it goes the lower I shift the slower it goes ideas its coming from the rear my guess is I need a new clutch soon....

CV joints.

You may be able to reverse and repack the CVs. VW also have the same half shaft at a great price.
|
It could be the limp home tabs telling you that you need a new clutch - Remove starter and inspect for loose bits of rubber from the rubber center clutch disk..
|
I've also been getting clicking in the left rear lately...intermittent though. When it does happen, it happens on acceleration with increased weight on rear, with clicking increasing in rate with the increase in speed. It also only happens when I'm driving straight, never on turns from what I can tell. I had suspected CV, though - Just had it in the shop for other reasons last week and mech says everything looked fine, despite a little axle wear. There was no grease leaking from boots and the boots were in fine condition with no cracks or such.
Perhaps the grease is bad inside... |
If he didn't pull them to inspect them, It's possible you have cv joint problems. Wheel lugs are tight, yes?

I recall there was one other thing that happened recently as well - on the highway, the rear started shimmying for about a minute and then it went away...that and the clicking got me into the shop asap. |
Dumb but when I floor it the clicking goes away for Alittle bit
|
The clicking you describe is a classic symptom of CV joints failing. The noise can come and go depending on load.
The easiest way to diagnose the problem is to drive slowly while someone walks close behind - listening. |
