gas cap..how to get the top off

anyone know how the red plastic top of the gas cap comes off I need to switch the locks into another one...I thought I had read somewhere that you take a very thin small screwdriver and push it up between the red plastic and the metal ring and pry it off ??? Don't wanna ruin my new cap with pry marks and not have it come off without some info first

The red top half of the gas cap on my old cap had a ledge underneath (by forceps) that fits in the inside of the lower black top.

If you muscle the red top half you may crack it with a screwdriver.

I pried my top half off with a screwdriver at the ends of the finger grips on the cap.

I tried to get one side of the cap to break loose where the forceps is holding the cap top photo. Once you get this edge loose, the cap will come apart easy.
