making it like new

Lads,

just wanna know what the cost has been for most of ya's to make your engine like new...

so those of you who pulled and cleaned up and replaced it all to those who just gave the engine fresh parts and a clean up.

how long did it take as well

Peace out lads

The time and cost is completely up to you and the condition of the car now. Very hard to give a price,

I threw out my adding machine... I couldn't handle the numbers it was spitting out relative to my maintenance and upgrade costs.

My motor has 122k miles on it and I put about a grand into it for belts, rollers, all rubber seals, injector rebuild (witchunter), gaskets (including the oil pan and both ends of the crank. New ignition components and then an additional $100 for a like new sachs clutch package I snagged on ebay. A couple more hundred for special tools, i.e., engine support bar and tranny jack from Harbor Freight, Flywheel lock and a couple of specialty sockets. All labor was done by me and that saved me a "wad". I pulled the rod bearings while the pan was off and they were replaced even though the original ones looked like new and the rubber clutch looked good, too, but I don't trust it with 50k miles on it. Did the work in my spare time since this is a resto project and not a DD.

Cool Lads,

Looking at a rough figure in general.

Pics look cool and info is a big help.

I have given myself a figure of $2500 to $5000 for me to get the engine nice and new looking plus some other bits like brakes.

Just gotta wait for my Bike to sell to get started.

The latest '85.5 I have now I have restored completely - every piece of rubber has been replaced; under hood and all body seals. Motor rebuilt tip to bottom with every thing new on it (Except crank, pistons, rods, oil pump, head, and cam tower) all else in new - Rebuilt the original head completely. New Clutch system, flywheel, disk, pressure plate , and throw out bearing, clutch bearing fork, fork shaft, and shaft bearings. New brakes with rebuilt calipers, new pads, new rotors, and new wear sensors. Changed all fluids; oil, Hydraulic fluids, gear oils, and anti freeze. New carpets, new seat covers, new dash cover, new covered "A" pillars, new covered "A" panel, new 10 spkr. stereo (10 spkr. parts were excellent used, all other stereo parts new). A new windshield was installed. Front bumper was shaved and recessed, as was the rear bumper. All new 3" exhaust, from headers to tip. New ball joints and springs, and up-grade sway bars at front, and rear suspension. All new Koni Struts and shocks at 4 corners. A new battery, and 130 AMP Alternator (Rebuilt) with remote voltage regulator. With new Black Lacquer Paint - and the list goes on - Cost - I do not know, but the stack of receipts is over 4" tall, I have never added it up, afraid to. Plus two and half years of my labor.

That's my fun hobby to restore our 944's, and I especially love the '85.5 MY.

Have Pfun

PS: Forgot about new 17" rims and tires...

i want's a mechanical hot shot either, but with the help of outstanding members i had braved and got a 951 before and learned a lot from it.
if you had the time and the funds readily available from the get go, i don't see why you wouldn't be able to accomplish mutiple tasks in a short amount of time.
good luck

My son and I just got done putting a new engine in his 951. We used the old block from my car (I switched engines a few months ago) and his head (which had had a valve job a couple years ago. My son did most of the heavy/greasy work; I painted and cleaned.

For cleaning the engine, I used a lot of Brake Clean and a pressure washer. For the engine bay and more sensitive parts, I used "Kaboom" - a bathroom cleaner - which really works well. I went through about 6 rolls of paper towels!

The lower end of the new block was okay, so we didn't do the rod bearings. There was some leakage, though, so we did the front seals and the rear main seals. We also replaced the seals in the Air-Oil Separator. We also installed a new wiring harness.

We did a lot of "while-you're-in-there" stuff: we replaced all the heater hoses and the clutch hydraulic line; we rebult the power steering pump and had new lines built - both high-pressure lines cost $55! (Williams Oil Filter Co). They used the old metal lines and just replaced the rubber portions, using the old banjo bolt fittings. They work great. We also replaced the engine mounts.

Total cost was around $600. We dropped it in about 5 hours, then it sat for about 10 days while we painted and cleaned and what not, then we reinstalled it in maybe 5-6 hours.

It started right up! Although it would only idle - which really worried us.

My son did a lot of reading that night and as it turned out, he'd used the wrong wiring diagram for his MAF (Lindsey Stage 2). Once he figured that out, it took him 5 minutes to re-wire it, and now it's running great.

He's nearly finished tuning it - it's running really strong, boosting at around 20 PSI.

It's heavily modded: Lindsey Stage 2 Turbo, 75# injectors, 3 bar FPR, 951Max chips, manual boost controller, Innovate Wideband O2, PowerPerfect piggyback controller, Tial 38mm dual port wastegate which dumps to atmosphere, 3" catless, mufflerless exhaust, plus a bunch of suspension mods.

Here's some pictures: Trav's Engine Change

It can only look new once but I gave a try to make my engine look as new as possible.

Cost was around USD 500 for some parts, plating and paint.

Hey Aussie!

I will get down there and visit again. Promise. Just had hard times at work and with family.

Some stuff is not so expensive.

I got oodles of vacuum hose and 'blaster' ignition coil from Lindsey Racing. $100 all up.
New injectors off eBay. Less than $300. (as cheap as reconditioning, really)
Throttle cam is cheap, again from eBay.
Distributor cap, rotor and plugs are all cheap from here.
The Magnacor ignition wires from Pelican are good (IMO) and cheap-ish.
The 'alien spaceship' part to the intake manifold from the airbox is cheap.

Just that little list can make a real difference.
