Passenger Window fun

On my 86 944 the passenger window did seem funky from the time I bought it. The switches on the driver and passenger side worked but sometimes it wouldn't go, and the switches are a bit sticky. The driver side window switch looks new and works really well, and still is functioning. However now the passenger window went down and won't go back up at all anymore. Since the driver window still works does this mean it's not a relay, or fuse and it's a dead motor? It's probably not a switch since both switches failing at the same time is really unlikely? If it is the motor: porsche 944 turbo S2 924 - PASSENGER RIGHT window power motor | eBay

Will a turbo motor fit just fine in a N/A? I assume there is no difference. It was suggested to me that I might/should replace seals/channels while I'm doing this. Is that necessary? Could I clean the channel or anything, perhaps some blockage caused the motor to work harder than it should and that killed it?

On mine, the contacts on the switch were rather worn (went down, but not up). Does the window switch on the passenger door work? If so, you could swap them while you fix (or replace) the old switch.

You could also remove the window motor to manually test.

The window is currently half way down. Every time I hit down it would roll down but refuses to go up. Neither the passenger window switch on the driver's side or the passenger side will make the window go up. They both seem to go down but I stopped touching it for the moment.

Swap one of the switches with the driver switch, and see if you can get the window to go up. If so, you just need to repair or replace the switches. After 20+ years of abuse, the contacts tend to wear quite a bit.

I suggest getting authentic parts though. I got an ebay switch while I repaired my switch, but it does not fit well, and does not look exactly like the factory switches.

Thanks, that's a good idea. I should be able to test the motor while I'm in there, if it is the motor, will a 951 motor work fine in my late-model 944?

My passenger side window also acts weird if controlled by the driver's side. goes down fine but sometimes difficult to go up. It's finicky, but I finally found that pressing the upper left corner of the switch works every time...I'm sure the internals of the switch are bad, but FWIW, just a simple suggestion to try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I tried mashing it every way though I know how old electroniks start acting up in the weirdest ways like that.

The switches for the passenger window are in series, meaning that if the contacts in the driver's side switch for the PS window are not connecting properly, then the PS window switch will also not work.

Make sure that you clean/check both switches when debugging.

Good luck, Keith

That's really helpful, maybe it is the driver side switch then. Because that was the switch that was really being an issue, I don't remember having a problem with the second switch.

First, get some contact cleaner, one can with lubricant and one with no lubricant and spray the switch with the no-lube one while you move the switch back and forth (you are cleaning the contacts). Use lots! Make sure the cleaner stays off the plastic, some cleaners don't like plastic. If this gets the switch to work, spray it again with the cleaner with the lube. Just like old Volvos, the switches get gunned up and can usually be resurrected. This method works with all the switches but make sure you finish with the lube or the switches will feel awful when you use them.

You can also disconnect the battery and use the same procedure on your ignition switch. It will feel brand new.

Okay, almost getting it done but at a frustrating part that should be so easy. Electric Window Troubleshooting

I have the switches out and pulled off like in the first image under "Procedure". I am using a flat tip screwdiver, but I can't push those plastic tabs on the side of the switch in to release the internals. What am I doing wrong?

EDIT: Nevermind, got it by sliding the screwdriver in between

Actually, you don't have to take the switches apart if you use the contact cleaner method. Just squirt the cleaner in the cracks. Re-reading my earlier post, I MEANT to say to not get the cleaner on the plastic trim - you can soak the switches in cleaner if you need to (you won't).

Ok I have just recently had the same problem. Passengers window goes down but not up. My fix so far was to, first swap the switches around and establish which switch wasn't working this also allowed me to raise the passenger window - phew! Then I completely dissasembled the faulty switch and sanded the contact points - watch the springs and ball bearings when you take it apart. Re assembled the switch and everything seems to be working again. We will see how long this lasts

Mine are still working perfectly, I cleaned with an eraser from a pencil. In retrospect I might just buy replacements because I hated those little balls and springs, and the switch itself does get kinda hard to click over time regardless
