Question Sunroof Stuck Open

My son's sunroof is open and will not move. I can hear the motor running but there is no movement up or down. I suspect that the gear is broken or the cable is broken. But... until I can get to investigating and repairing it, it's still stuck open. The weather is forecasting rain all weekend. Question: is there a way to manually close an electric sunroof??? byt - early 85 944... Thanks

If you need to manually close the sunroof, go into the rear cargo area, pull off the carpet on the left side (driver's side) wall. Behind it you will find the motor. Attached to the guide track (hopefully) will be a flat metal tool. remove it, and there will be a hex headed piece on the motor/track assembly somewhere that the hex hole in the tool fits over. use the tool to crank this around until the sunroof closes.

Hopefully it will work, but since you say the motor is running and the sunroof is not, i have my doubts as to whether ir not it will work. this procedure depends on the cable, and gears being in good condition, it's usually usefull when the motor doesn't work.

Good luck
Mike

Mike, makes sense... I'll call my son and have him give it a try.
Thanks for your reply. Randy

Sounds like gears. Remove the small headliner piece at the rear and open the gear boxes. One gear is most likely still on the cable and one is not. So pull the gears and let the roof down. close the boxes up and fix them later. Whole job only requires a #2 phillips and 1/2hr of your time. Aligning and re-installing new gears is another issue.
