Porsche Crest Best wheel/tire choice for 944S DE car?

Hello All,
I have driven 30+ track days in my '87 944S and recently became a PCA instructor. My 944S is a streetable DE car, with Koni 250 lb. coilovers, Hawk brake pads, Sparco seats and 6-point harnesses and B & B Exhaust. I have been using the stock phone dials with Toyo RA-1 225/50/15 tires on all 4 wheels. The front wheels have 1 1/2 degrees of negative camber. The car is relatively fast on the straights and handles well, but now I am seeking a set up that is more aggressive on the turns. What are my best wheel and tire choices? I am thinking about a set of 17s with Nittos.
Many thanks,
Gulf-Porsche21

Base wheels are 7x15.

So, you could run 16"s (like 944S2/951/968) , 17"s (968) or 18"s without too much trouble. How much do you want to spend?

Could find a set of Boxster or 996 wheels, often in the $500-700 range. Or go big with some nice Fikse, BBS etc wheels.

Stay away from some aftermarket wheels.. they can weigh "A TON".

I have a set of BBS wheels they weight absolutely nothing the smaller the better usually as they are lighter. As racer said some aftermarket wheels can weight a ton or be very susceptible to bending if you hit a bump or pothole etc...

Thumbs up Low cost, +1987 Turbo wheel combo works best.

Recommend 16 inch OEM 951 turbo, 968 or Turbo S wheels.
Nitto's, Toyo's or Falkin's work... low costing and wet/dry handling 225 front, 235/245 rear.
and 7mm spacer in rear wheels.

Check Tire Rack for prices and visuals...

Later.

The only potential issue with 16" is, much like 15" there aren't too many tire choices available, and maybe even fewer if you run a staggered set up.

I know several folks who still run 16"s.. some of them run "square".. 8x16 front and rear and then run either 225s or 245s all around (usually 245s).

I think 17"s would be a wiser "long term" upgrade.

I'm using 17" Fikse wheels on my 944S. Light, strong, way better looking than Phone Dials.

I have 16x8's and run 245/45/16 on them and a set of 17x8.5 (Boxster rear wheels) and run 255/40/17 on them. They fit great on my 944S and give me plenty of grip. I run all of my tire set ups squared with 3.5 degrees negative camber in the front. Turn in is phenomenal.

Car and wheels are for sale.

I have a set of 4 17x9, Boxster Turbo Twist wheels i would consider selling. I autocross with them, and i like the 17x9 on all 4 corners set up. Wheels are in near perfect shape.

I can send you pictures, send me a pm. I am in Tampa area.

+1 on equal sizes. Also, +1 on the Twists. . .good brake cooling, and so ugly there must be about a million takeoffs out there for sale.

i would never run the twists. they are way too heavy. that will cost you in both acceleration and braking.

i'd look for a wheel that is about 20lbs or less. there are plenty of them out there.

the 17" 993 Cup wheels that came on the later 968 aren't bad, but the C2 Turbo wheels that came on the earlier ones are a bit heavier, and are inside offset more than the 993 Cup, which hurts stability.

frankly, a set of the stock 16" wheels for the 968 would probably be the cheapest and lightest setup

I also have C2 Turbo 17x7.5 ET 52, 17x9 ET 47, and they sit real nice as far as offset. They are the Borbet replicas. Not sure weight of those, but the twists are lighter with Yoko ADO8.

I may sell those as well, have new street HTR III,s.
