Dash Recovering
I have a line on a used dash, I want to recover in leather my self, I know they make a metal vent cover but can you get at the bottom/underneath of the dash for glueing? I would fill any cracks with silicone, then install the leather.
I know this has been discussed before but I have never seen any thing about the under side of these vents |

you want to talk about a killer ? last week i was removing a dash out of a 1984 944 that had a full cage welded in the car . the car always had a carpet looking dash cover on it from new until the car was turned into a race car 5 years ago . the sad thing is the dash had no cracks in it and because the car was going under a weight reduction program the dash had to go . it could not get removed with out cutting the front legs of the cage out of cutting the dash on half . we went for cuting the dash in half with a air saw .

I assume you are referring to the defrost vents. I guess you could try to take apart the vents to gain access to the underside but I am not sure how that would help anything. I have a cracked dash sitting in my garage and can take a look at it if you want to see if the vents are screwed in or glued. I suspect they are glued.

I recommend filling the cracks with a sandable material. Covering your dash is like painting a car, flaws in the surface will probably be visible through your leather. I used the metal cover for the vents like you mentioned. Bruce |
