944 verses Manhole cover
Just bought a 1984 944, decent shape for its age.
I found this site while looking at this car and arranging the details, It seems like a good bunch of member. I planned on joining it in the near future (lots of surfing on my part so far) - but didn't expect to be requesting help so soon. The previous owner had lost the keys several years ago and had the car sitting in his garage. Bought it without hearing it run, but checked it out the best that I could - and rolled the dice. Got it towed home and started work. I had keys cut for it by a locksmith friend of mine (took three tries to find the right key). Drained the gas and filled with new gas, oil change, new battery etc. It fired up in a heartbeat and run quiet, no noise, no leaks. My next step was to insure it and take it for a drive - steered and handled very good. So... I was a very happy owner of the car that I had wanted for almost 30 years. Then.......Next evening after work I took it for another drive. And found a manhole cover raised about 4" out of the pavement - found it to late. F&*% I was only doing 30-40 KPH, but it stopped me dead. Cracked the oil pan, snapped the engine cross-member, broke the hood main latch, somehow "popped" the right sway bar bushing out of the retaining bracket, --- and I am not sure what else damage has been done. Not happy -- And having a hard time finding parts up here in Northern British Columbia (Canada). I have seen some parts at Pelican that I can use, buy any suggestions for the cross member, hood latch and oil-pan ? Thanks in advance. AC Last edited by acoilfld; 08-29-2012 at 09:18 PM.. |

Did you file a police report? The city should be responsible for the damage to your car since it is a manhole cover on a public road

Bummer about the car/damage and "lesson learned".
If there is that much damage, you may now be the owner of a "parts car" or need to find a "parts car" to make yours whole again.

Good Idea, I will file a Police report tomorrow - and a report/complaint with the city.
It is very dis-heartening. I am (was) really impressed with the car. I will keep you posted as to what happens. Regardless of what happens - I still will need a source for a cross member and oilpan (at the least) . Thanks AC Last edited by acoilfld; 08-30-2012 at 09:45 PM.. Reason: addition |
