What is a 944S engine worth these days??
My buddy discovered one in his Porsche storage bin: he forgot he had it, '87-88 we figure. No pictures yet, but also no idea what it's worth.
Anyone looking for an engine?? It was removed to make the car a race car, 951-powered. Thanks, Mark

$2 at the most. In fact, you'd better just sell it to me - I'll pay five times that.
![]() Is the S still the 2.5L with the DOHC? Edit: Also, I'm sorry, but that's hilarious. How do you forget you have an engine?

I was thinking in the 1500 range, I know that they have a tensioner issue that can take out the head.
I believe a 2.5 DOHC.

Bearing in mind that I'm no expert, I'd say about $1500 actually sounds pretty appropriate if it's still kosher, but you wouldn't see that kind of money selling on eBay or craigslist.
The issue is that it's not as common as the SOHC 2.5, and not as desirable as a Turbo or a 3.0. The dual-cams are enough to make it pretty desirable in my book, but most looking to transplant would go straight for the 3.0.

Then again, maybe I spoke too soon:
I think they'll probably have some trouble selling at that price, but who knows..

Really it depends on a lot of things. A complete engine with no history and having sat a while you're looking at about $1250 at the most. A running pull-out with no history will get you about $1500. A lower mileage running pull out with records, no leaks, good numbers, and a recent water pump and tensioner pads will get you no more than $2500.
There is a complete S2 motor for sale on RL right now with 159k on it and records but a little leak for $2300. If I had an S that needed a motor I'd throw that in there for the minimal premium over another S motor. |

But then again, you can find real deals out there too....I pulled a bone stock 951 engine (blown head gasket) from a car for a guy, installed a his spare engine, and he let me have the complete engine (less turbo and intake) with alt, p/s pump and a/c compressor for $400.
I replaced the blown head gasket (and did a valve job while the head was off) and it is running happily in my 951 now. Total cost including HG and valve job....$650.

I paid $900 for a long block with no history.
Tear down showed no issues, other than cams missing some teeth. New cams for $400 Jeff |

At the right price, I'd be interested except I already have a spare 2.5 DOHC.
I'm using an S as my current daily driver. The spare engine came from a damaged car I bought for $900. For $1500, I'd want to see it running in a car before purchasing. One that has been sitting for an extended period would have to be priced accordingly. Since my spare has been sitting for an extended period, I will not install it until it has been torn down and rebuilt with the crank cross-drilled in case the engine ends up in a race car. |

Sight unseen and knowing its been in a "parts bin" i wouldnt be comfortable paying more than 300 maybe $400 if it was very very clean. I would hope you would accurately represent this fact to any buyer, thats a very big point that a buyer needs to know.
I say this because someone tried to sell me an n/a long block for four hundred which after a lot of talking i found the man had lied to me, and the engine had been sitting dry for four years in a shed. But of course he was firm on the price and "totally positive it would run" and that i was "crazy to say anything otherwise". |

The head is worth more than the block! all 944's use the same 2.5l block and they are a dime a dozen. The only difference are the pistons with the 4-valve dishes on top. S Pistons are readily available from numerous vendors.
If you want to drop an S motor into a N/A car, you will need to find the matching DME and harness, and a very important electronic piece that attaches to the harness that is located on the front left fender inside the engine bay just below the headlight housing. There are also several additional vacumn lines that attach to the intake manifold. A good head with cams and matching cam caps (VERY IMPORTANT) is worth $400. For a daily driver, you don't have to worry about the chain tensioner. If you make it a race motor, you will invest several thousands going thru it to make it race ready, including reinforcing the chain tensioner mount. |

cam caps are specific to each head and are numbered. The Cam Caps are line bored with the head during manufacturing. This also includes the end caps.
If you buy an S head without the cam caps it's this side of worthless. We have (once) taking the time to use cam caps from another head and it took about 20 hours of machining and labor to achieve factory specs on the tolerances. |

Why don't " daily drivers have to worry about the chain tensioner"?

as long as you change your oil on a regular basis you should never have any problems.
during a race, I'm between 5000 - 7000 rpm for extended periods of time, sometimes up to 2 hours. this will stress and break the tower. |
